BODY OBSCURE OBJECT is part live dance performance, part cinematic experience, exploring the body as a site for visual spectacle and ritual. The work dissects the theatrical encounter and invades the physical body guided by the rudimentary techniques of narrative cinema. The theatre is re-conceptualised and mapped onto performance-installation sites, which will host the episodic choreography and video live-feed. The audience are divided into two groups to further engage with the fragmented live performance. The intention for the choreographic visuals generated through live video feed and editing, is to render and obscure the inherent 'truth' within these intimate encounters.
In BODY OBSCURE OBJECT, the audience is located at a (dis)juncture, where the totality of experience is only capable of being a subjective rendition of a complex scenario. The intervention of the sound and live feed reflects a missing action, an asynchronous reaction, and an impossible perspective.
Fundraising Objectives
The funds raised through our Pozible Campaign are crucial to the final development of the work in September leading up to the performance season 28th September-5th October, Melbourne Fringe Festival. It will fund:
1.The visual aesthetic - a core component of the project. The funds will allow us to hire the high-quality projectors, cameras and video card required to fully realise the technological infrastructure design and create our cinematic vision for the work. The work can be executed with two 3.5k projectors, one 6k projector, 2-3 professional standard cameras, a video switcher, cable runs at the minimum, which is already costing a fortune. We will also need to purchase the necessary software that is capable of combining multiple strands of videos into the climatic finale!
2.The early development of the work has been generously supported by JUMP Mentoring, Lucy Guerin Inc and a lovely array of small commissions. Despite this, the project is mostly self-funded by the director, and much of the time is dedicated by the performers and collaborators involved. A portion of the funds will be used as a token reward for their commitment and hard work during the continual process and the intensive development in September.
Background
BODY OBSCURE OBJECT is a highly ambitious project, combining experimental performance, VJ and new media technologies as well as expanding on ideas taken from cinema practice. The project involves three up-and-coming artists Shian Law, James Wright and Matthew Adey, veteran sound designer Duane Morrison and costume designer Michelle Boyde, as well as dancers James Andrews and Melissa Jones and Emily Ranford. The project is a celebration of the independent spirit of the Melbourne arts scene and aims to achieve an arresting presentation of cutting-edge and innovative thinking, despite the restraint of minimal funding. Your generous assistance in this chapter of our artistic exploration will be truly appreciated, acknowledged and remembered.
