UPDATE & THANK YOU:

Thank you to everyone who have so far supported CHIKA: A Documentary Performance to be presented in Jakarta as part of Festival Salihara! Great thing about crowd funding is that it humbles us as artists when we ask for assistance, and when contributions are given, it gives us the strength and courage to continue with what we believe in.

Although we have reached our minimum target, we are still short of funds and ask you to kindly continue your support.

Because Chika Honda's story had been an attempt by artists to tell a story otherwise unrecognised by the mainstream, CHIKA, has had grass roots support since its inception in 2004.

See the amazing list of supporters:

We are in awe of those who have supported us, and hope that you will assist us to share this meaningful production with audiences from Indonesia.

Please give us hand in telling this important story in Jakarta.

CHIKA:

Chika Honda is a real person. She is a Japanese woman who spent a decade in Australian jails for a crime she always insisted she did not commit. She was one of a Japanese tour group who were arrested, convicted and sentenced to jail for importation of heroin in1992. She was released on parole and deported from Australia in 2002. Despite efforts by her lawyers to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, her name has yet to be cleared. The case is commonly known as the Melbourne Case.

CHIKA: A Documentary Performance tells the story of Chika Honda. It is a multi layered theatre production with documentary images, interviews, archival video, original music and choreography. It is contemporary story telling, that crosses the boundaries of art and documentary. It follows Chika Honda's story of her childhood, arrest, incarceration, her suicide attempt, her becoming a Christian, and her eventual return home to Japan.

Festival Salihara is Indonesia's premier performing arts festival with a series of works in dance, theatre and music held at the Komunitas Salihara complex, a cultural enclave active since 2008, and the first private multidisciplinary arts centre in Indonesia.

PROPOSAL:

We have now reached our initial fundraising target of $2,400, however in reality, like all arts projects, we are still short of funds to cover our costs involved in taking our team of 6 artists from Melbourne and Sydney to Jakarta for 5 nights to rehearse and perform.  We would like to continue to ask your support until our deadline.

CHIKA is an important story to tell, and we invite supporters of human rights, performing arts, documentary photography and many others who believe in the power of art to make a difference to take part in our efforts to bring CHIKA to Indonesian audiences.
