REBELLION; A youth dance work based in Hobart by DRILL Performance Company.

In May/June this year DRILL Performance Company started work on the creative development for its new Hobart-based work, REBELLION. Together with the cast of 25 young people from the Hobart area, choreographer Joshua Lowe began to explore the plight of the common teenager, trapped under the iron thumb of the parental unit, the not-so-silent battles waged between parent and offspring, getting your own way, going your own way, declaring independence and rebelling!

The creative development involved an intensive period of rehearsals during which the cast worked collaboratively to explore the idea of 'rebellion', using the time to freely create, play and experiment. Nerf gun wars, mattress surfing and screaming tantrums became a daily occurrence in a process that culminated in a sharing for invited guests.

The REBELLION Creative Development 2012 was a part of a program initiated by previously Launceston-based DRILL to research and implement a youth dance model within the Hobart community. DRILL now hopes to continue working in Hobart to provide opportunities for young people to engage in dance in a way that is inclusive, non-competitive and at little to no-cost to the participants and their families. This is why we need your support!

Next year in 2013 DRILL will be returning to Hobart for the final instalment of REBELLION. Joshua and the cast will further develop, rehearse and refine the work over a 10-week period in preparation for an epic performance season open to the public. REBELLION promises to be a comical, entertaining and fresh work with the energy that only a huge group of young people can muster!

Putting on a production such as this can be quite expensive, so we need a little help to get the rebellion rolling! Your support will be going towards purchasing and making production materials for the work - costumes, lighting, set and props. We're going to need a lot of azure and lime coloured materials to truly make the work spectacular.

What you are also supporting is the experience of these 25 young people (and every audience member lucky enough to see the work). REBELLION offers an opportunity for those interested to learn about  and experience dance and engage with professional artists. Those involved in the project find within the rehearsals an environment of acceptance, friendship, and creativity without restriction or inhibition. They have commented on how the project gave them more confidence in their own abilities in terms of their own creativity, performance skills, and other social aspects of their lives.

We're trying to raise $2,000 in just 20 days which will not only give us a great head start, but put us in a great position for our funding applications due in August. We're up for the challenge!
