51 Paintings (Feature Film)

In 2006, I visited the medieval St Michaels church in Schwaebisch Hall, Germany and viewed a series of 51 religious paintings dating back several hundred years. After drawing each artwork in a small travel notebook I later positioned a series of actors and friends in locations of historical significance to reconstruct each painting through video. Six years in the making and filmed in 3 countries, those images are now complete in what can only be described as a unique blend of artistic beauty and cinematic stillness. This art film plays out the notions of slowness as a means of cinematic device by exploring the poetic links between memory, place and time.
The film is played backwards and also captured in slow motion, so if you like Cold Play's video clip The Scientist, then you'll love mine!

HOW DID YOU FUND THE FILM PRODUCTION?
It took me six years of maxing-out credit cards, taking out a personal loan, and working a day job to help fund the production.
WHERE DID YOU SHOOT THE FILM?
In London, Schwabisch Hall, Stuttgart, Hobart on board The Lady Nelson and throughout Victoria, Australia.
WHAT IS AN ART FILM?
An art film is like any other movie except it usually involves a conceptual element that may be void of aliens, helicopters, hot chicks and space ships.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS FILM?
My film is divided into 3 acts which serve as a kind of personal diary over the 6 year shooting period. The first act opens in the weeks leading to the birth of my first child (that's Tammy in the main pic) and my journey from Australia to Europe and back. The second act references the trials and tribulations of little money, a new family and the quest to make films through the guise of a silent B/W horror movie - the wolf at the door becomes a vampire and the victims on a beach represent my quest for sleep! The third act references our big move from the city and into a small coastal regional setting with a snapshot of my completed young family in the final scene. There are no words spoken, only moving paintings and is meant to be experienced, not understood, just like looking at a painting in an art gallery. Its the most personal and honest artwork I've ever created, made with love and determination, and hope you find it worthwhile.
HOW WILL YOU DISTRIBUTE THE FILM, CD & BOOK?
The DVD, CD and e-Book will be for sale on my blog via PayPal and listed through the James Bennett catalogue, available for world-wide purchase. Honeyhouse Films will be the official distributor. The DVD and CD will both have a registered ISBN, EAN allocation and certified EAN barcode, with a legal deposit made to the State Library of Victoria and the National Library of Australia. The e-book will have a registered ISBN number allocation, listed as a CIP and legal deposit made to the National Library of Australia. So if you pledge money, your name in the film credits will be at these places.
WHAT RATING IS 51 PAINTINGS?
Thats up to the Classification Board but suspect it may be PG (no strange things with fluffy animals).
WHO IS COMPOSING THE MUSIC?
There are five main contributors to the film's soundtrack: Andrew Rostas from Melbourne, classically trained pianist at the Newcastle Con who did most of the work in Act 2, Nancy Calo from Melbourne, classically trained pianist and vocalist who played some of Act 2 on a pipe organ from St Ignatius Church that was originally installed in the Melbourne Exhibition Buildings during the 1880 World Fair, and Tom Fahy, a prolific composer who contributed to Act 1 and 3, and who has been releasing albums on Stag Records for over twenty years. Sophie Brown, an up and coming Melbourne musician and animator contributed to Act 3, and AREMSTAR (pronounced "R-EM-STAR) contributed to Act 3 as well. This is Shaun Wilson's concept band based on the computer command known as "RM*" which deletes data from file systems.
HOW WILL YOU SCREEN 51 PAINTINGS?
The film will be mastered on HD-CAM SR and DCP to be cinema-ready. If I can raise enough money for a cinematic release it will screen at cinemas, galleries, museums, and arts festivals world-wide.
THE FUTURE
