ABOUT THE SHOW

Idle Hands
is a new physical theatre work, being presented at The Substation in Newport. Created by Avan Whaite in collaboration with Daniel Power and Reuben Zalme, this team represents a powerhouse of circus talent, with previous credits including, Cirque du Soleil, Strange Fruit, Stalker, Monoxide, Palazzo (Amsterdam), and GOP (Germany) to name a few. This work explores the edge where circus becomes dance, and dance becomes circus, creating a physical vocabulary that is both intricate and astonishing.

WHAT WE NEED

We need your help to cover some of the many costs that go into making a new independent production. Your contribution will support the growth of innovative physical theater and cross-genre work. These funds will go towards; the hire of venue and rehearsal space, and prop creation including unique set pieces that are functional for lighting.

MORE SHOW DETAIL

Idle Handsuses elements from the story of Pandora, to give emotional driving force for the work. The insatiable nature of curiosity, regardless of consequence, and the glee associated with rule breaking, over-indulgence, and anarchy. These themes create opportunities for moments of both comedy and tragedy.

The movement element of the show is a fusion of techniques from contemporary dance, adagio, acrobatics, break dance, and capoeira. With a gyroscopic and hypnotic rhythm, the choreography becomes an acrobatic yet effortless tapestry. Which maintains its quality of movement from the ground, to the air, and back.

A swath of delighted and terrified audiences will attest to the quality of work produced by these performers. Daniel Power spent three years with the prestigious Cirque du Soleil, and has since continued to astound audiences on a variety of aerial apparatus. Avan Whaite’s work on the Chinese Pole has been showcased with a range of companies’ world wide, and he is highly renowned as performer and innovator of the form.

The set is created from a range of lamps and household furniture, arranged into organic-looking structures. This creates an intriguing play of light and shadow for the performers to work in, as well as providing unique opportunities for acrobatic interaction.
