Hello Australia, I'm First Dog on the Moon - I'm the editorial cartoonist at
crikey.com.au where I produce an hilarious daily cartoon on the news of the day, politics or Australian Cultural life using dogs or cuttlefish or similar creatures. I also perform ( I have a
Melbourne Fringe show coming up) and occasionally I am asked to do art, for example...
Last year I exhibited at Platform Gallery Space at Flinders St in Melbourne. I filled 13 glass exhibition spaces with cartoons, cardboard animals, playing cards, ceramic potoroos and a tennis ball. It was quite impressive even if I say so myself, and I do. This October I have been asked to contribute once again, but this time i am going to fill a single much larger space for the entire month. I am quite excited about this.
The working title for the work is A Marsupial Life - I will draw 30 cartoons depicting the life and times of an anthropomorphised marsupial, probably a bandicoot or quokka. These 30 cartoons will be placed on clocks and will then be arranged with considerable aplomb within the exhibition space.
This work is consistent with my ongoing artistic practise and development as a cultural commentator, my work tends toward interrogating cultural and political identity through the medium of cartoon (specifically anthropmorphised native fauna) and the whole thing is going to be adorable. That last sentence was the compulsory arty sentence required by funding guidelines.
The installation will also include a hand crafted marsupial tableau depicting one event or incident from the life of the relevant marsupial. This will be arranged on the floor of the space on some artificial grass (that stuff is expensive). The marsupial/s in the tableau will be made by me out of felt. WIth my own hands and sewing machine.
Each person who donates $60 will receive one of the clocks featured in the work. I will mail it to them after the closure of the show at the end of October. These delightful objects feature an image from the installation and are 24cm in size. They will come with a badly drawn certificate of authenticity. Each person who donates $30 will receive an autographed ABC Interpretive Dance Bandicoot Tea Towel. If you donate $10 I will draw a picture of you on a thank you post it note WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE (I am that good) and I will mail it to you.
This is your completely exciting opportunity to contribute to the growing oeuvre of one of Australia's self proclaimed up and coming cultural icons. Or something.
