MEN OF THE EARTH
Following on from Andrew Kavanagh’s highly successful 2010 film AT THE FORMAL, MEN OF THE EARTH (to be shot in early June) takes us behind the stop sign of a road works site to observe an unusual and unexpected funeral ceremony. Here, Andrew continues his exploration of ceremony and ritual in yet another surprising and unpredictable narrative. Andrew has been described by Australian Film and Television Director Stuart McDonald (STRANDED, RUSH, SUMMER HEIGHTS HIGH) as a “unique singular voice in cinema” and is a rising talent to watch out for in the independent film industry.
SYNOPSIS:
Traffic is delayed on the edge of a road works site, but what are the councilmen doing?
MEN OF THE EARTH presents a unique perspective of a world we are seldom allowed to see: behind the STOP sign. But what we find is not exactly what we expect. Under the guise of roadwork, the councilmen are carrying out a mysterious traditional ceremony: the burial of their late Foreman.
Drawing on the sorrowful musicality of a twentieth century chain gang in a powerful climax, the film presents an outpouring of unbridled emotion, by a group of men we would last expect it from, raising questions about the nature of judgment and expectation - particularly judgments made of the stoic “Aussie bloke”.
But when the foreman’s body is in the ground, the STOP sign turns to SLOW, and it’s back to business as usual on the road.
