Collider -Solo in Red, Multi-Media Development
"Kynan Robinson's new piece Solo in Red is both astoundingly beautiful and original. Setting out to capture the atmospheres of a Cormac McCarthy novel it does all that and more." - Vierre Magazine 2011
In August of 2012 acclaimed Melbourne ensemble Collider will be performing a piece entitled Solo In Red, written by the ensemble's trombone player and highly accomplished composer Kynan Robinson. The piece will be performed as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival program over 3 nights at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
Here's what Kynans says about the work
McCarthy's writing and the atmosphere he creates has a sparseness, detachment and tension and is always touched with a dry wit. He presents both the absolute beauty and absolute ugliness of existence, often within the same sentence. To me his works sits somewhere in the place of the spirit world and if you enter it it will often bring forth both frightening and peaceful truths.
In the composition of Solo In Red I am making a very personal statement on life and it’s deep sadness, only matched by its overwhelming beauty.
The many elements of this show, including performing with the incredible ensemble Collider, plus the multimedia production, all lend themselves to an experience that is both powerful and transporting for any audience member.
I am very excited to be presenting my new work at the Melbourne Recital Center and as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival. The Recital Center has many great memories for me both as a performer and audience member. It is a building of such beautiful dynamics and delightful aesthetics that it is almost the perfect place to hear this work."
Previously performed at a development show at the Melbourne venue, 45 Downstairs in December 2011, this performance left the audience awe inspired and has subsequently received both public and media accolades. This is a truly unique piece of music. Furthermore there lies an exciting opportunity to create a tourable show that can be performed at festivals worldwide and showcase Melbourne artists, and this unique and highly creative work.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP?
We would like to further develop work, taking it well beyond a musical experience into an totally immersive show and we need your help to get there! Your support would enable us to engage with Melbourne based artists and multimedia designers Michelle Robinson, Dotahn Caspi and Sean Kelly to create an atmosphere mirroring the music, which incorporates lighting design and an intensive and immersive multi-media component (animation/projection). The pledge will pay for the development and presentation of this aspect of the show.
The atmosphere they will create will sit in harmony with the music, drawing from Kynan’s original concept and intent used for the it's creation. These atmospheres can be described as highly effecting, minimal, haunting, individual and capturing both the deep sadness and ecstasy found in every moment in life, deeply spiritual.
WHERE TO FROM THERE?
The aim is to put create a truly world class, polished show. There has been interest from numerous Australian and international festivals already, any extra funds over our pledge will help get us there. Furthermore the work will be pitched at writers festivals worldwide, a very unique concept for this market, opening up huge potential for this piece and the ensemble. These initial shows are in Melbourne. If you cant get to them but would like to contribute make sure you let us know so we can include you when we come to your part of the world.
Satisfaction, knowing that great art is getting out there and you’ve made us smile!
