Tim NashThere must be a better way to raise more money, I was scrolling through the Newspaper and saw that a rotary group raised $50 000 for a hospital in Newcastle.

Not that I think it was waisted on a hospital, but imagine if novocastrians raised that sort of money for TINA.

15y
Optional Option OptionalTrevor, I don't know if anyone anticipated this. The fact of Newcastle council funding seemed so bloody obvious that its just one of those things that could have been safely assumed. Whoops!

But they've done the right thing and come to the public, and if they can start fully funding it via crowdsourcing it will decouple the organization from the government teat which anyone whos dealt with arts funding knows is not just a blessing but also a curse.

I hope they raise a small fortune so next time round they can tell the govt to go screw themselves and start to really recapture that underground feel that made the earlier tina festivals so electric.15y
Marcus WestburyTrevor, i am not really sure of the current situation and i've had nothing to do with TINA for years but in general ...

Funding bodies have one deadline per year. I assume in Newcastle Council's case it was in the first half of this year, they then sit on the applications while they make a decision and then make an announcement when they have reached that decision. It would be the case that they announce that decision now - 12 weeks before the festival - and that is entirely beyond the control of TINA or any other applicant.

What makes it tricky is that the funding bodies usually specify the period that you can apply for activity for. Again, i don't have the specific info in front of mem for this year but on past experience it is normal that an application in the first half of the year would be for projects commencing in the second half of the year - hence TINA would have applied at the one time that they could have applied for this year's festival. One deadline per year announced in June or July means you have 12 weeks to adapt if you're in October and 12 months if you're the following June.

Should they have assumed that they would get that funding if it was not confirmed? I'm not in a position to answer that, however the fact that council had funded the festival for 10 years gives reason to think it's more likely than not. The flip side is had they got the money they would have been obliged to spend it on the coming festival so it's a bit of a catch 22. Plan to spend it and you end up with a shortfall, plan not to spend it and you end up having to wastefully get rid of it quickly -- probably the right answer is somewhere between the two.

On the upside, the very existence (and likely success) of this pozible campaign demonstrates an ability to act quickly to plug the gap. I hope and suspect that some combination of additional fundraising (eg. this ^), maybe carrying a small debt over into next year and cutting back on some expenses will be enough to get the festival across the line.15y

Trevor SmytheI’m disappointed the festival has headed this way. I do however, find it very odd that “12 weeks until the annual arts festival is scheduled to kick-off” the organisers had not secured/confirmed sufficient funding. Triennial—in place for a 3 year term. So…in theory, if the triennial funding won’t be renewed, this year’s festival should be factored in to the existing operational budget, and covered by the last division of the triennial funding. Or have I missed something? While I don’t envy the fantastic job the organisers have undertaken (to date) to produce TINA, this, without further information, strikes me as bad fund management. If so, I’m not convinced throwing more money at the problem is a solution.15y
