Set in a fishing village on the tsunami effected southern coast of Sri Lanka, ‘MAALU’ is a poignant coming of age story about a young boy who dreams of becoming a football superstar. While the lifeblood of the community is its fishing industry, the ever increasing pull of the outside world means that young boys no longer want to follow in the footsteps of their fathers and are instead enchanted with the idea and glamour of the western world. This theme of east-meets-west is encapsulated in the story of our protagonist, Asoka.

When we began this project, we set out to make something different. Rather than shooting a film in our own backyard, we decided to throw ourselves into a more challenging environment. The effect of westernisation on traditional eastern culture is an issue that we wanted to explore as filmmakers, especially having grown up in Australia and having an eastern heritage. Our film presents issues that everyone can relate to, but it does so in an eastern context.
