We follow Ellie, a tacky teenager with low self-esteem, who so desperately wants to feel beautiful that she enters a beauty pageant at her local RSL. But when her overweight, angelic mess of a mother, who takes comfort from the world by eating chicken and drinking coke, critically injures herself on the day of the pageant, Ellie must decide between her dream or her mother.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner is filled with chickens, fish fingers, bavarians and coke addicts (coca cola that is). It is comedic but a tragedy at its core. Told through the trappings of a mutually destructive, symbiotic mother-daughter relationship, our story aims to discuss how we experience and perceive body image. How we neglect and resent our parents during our teenage years when angst and frustration dictates how we feel and look. And the consequence of taking those who love us, and those whom we love, for granted.

When I moved to Melbourne to study at the Victorian College of the Arts I left my mum all by herself in Tasmania. It was then that I realised that my mum loved me more than anything else in the world (isn't that right, mother dearest???) and all my angst driven teenage years must have caused her so much pain. 

This film will be raw, and intimate. Delicate and ugly. Bold and beautiful. I want it to show the complexity and intensity of a single mother / only daughter relationship. It is wonderful and it's not. I want the audience to relate and empathize with the characters despite their flaws and find beauty in their bad habits. 

The film will also look at how much damage social beauty standards can do to young girls and how this pressure can have a huge impact on how we treat ourselves and how we treat others.

The challenges of this film are mainly financial.
We have a lovely, passionate crew - all who are working for much less than they are worth - and a story that is beautiful and sad, and ugly and funny that we can't wait to tell the story so please help us.
