FINALLY, A NEWSPAPER MELBOURNE CAN BE PROUD OF!

“Intelligent, irreverent and funny...”
Jason Steger, Literary Editor, The Age.

The Nose is Melbourne’s new monthly newspaper of journalism, literature and satire; in the tradition of Private Eye, the Chaser newspaper and The eXile. No dull op-eds. No muffin nibbling and wine dribbling. No political agenda. Just hard-hitting original journalism, gags, cartoons, fiction, poetry and reviews. The Nose is anti-trend, pro-print and no-holds-barred.

We published two well-received free issues earlier this year as a test run, garnered a great review in The Age and an invite to speak at Monash University's Dissensus festival. You can read some of our favourite pieces from the tests here for free, and check out some brand new content online at thenose.com.au while the campaign's running.

From Issue One: Malcolm's Media Blitz

The test issues were mostly gags and lit review; for the next batch of six we're pushing hard for original stories. We won’t ask you for an ongoing commitment or a long subscription, nor will we ever ask the government for grant cash. Journalism is a crumbling staircase, so we're playing it cool - six issues at a time, or bunk.

Fork out only $30 on half a year’s reading and you’ll get this kick-arse "content" in the first issue alone:

- The voice at the end of the phone: Chinese surveillance in Australia
- A weekend at the Mt Isa Rodeo with Bob Katter
- Dandenong's once and future pig
- How Green NIMBYs are wrecking Melbourne
- The favourite pastime of Qatar’s rich youth: death racing.
- Dom Amerena skewers Dave Eggers’ A Hologram For The King
- The latest instalment of Justin Clemens' modern-day Miltonic epic
- And much, much more...

PLUS

Episode one of our thrilling serialised comic:

THE ETERNAL THIRD TERM: THE RETURN OF

 ROBERT MENZIES

SO WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

The cash from your subscription goes straight to the printer. Our target of 150 initial subscribers is bare bones: that $4500 will defray most of our print costs, the rest of which will be topped up by advertising and non-subscription sales. The more subscribers we get, the more we can pay our contributors. Anything left over goes into web design and prettying ourselves up to attract a rich sponsor (that could be you!). We'd be stoked if you'd buy the paper, but if you want to chuck in a few extra bucks to support a new startup, we'd be forever in your debt.

WHY PRINT? AND WHO ARE WE ANYWAY?

A lot's been written lately about writers' pay and the collapse of traditional journalism. As young writers in our mid-twenties, freelancing and reviewing for nothing, blogging, vlogging and "building a personal brand" are grim prospects.

And what about the other end of the deal? Reading, and especially reading journalism, has less and less to do with enjoyment. People speed their way through countless pieces of long form writing every day to keep up with "the issues" - it's become a duty, rather than a pleasure to read.

So, we thought, why not start a newspaper instead? At the very least we could have some fun, write something original, and ring in the death of print along the way.

The Nose Editorial Team is:

Dom Amerena: After writing his first novel attached to a drip in the bowels of the Alfred hospital, Amerena worked at radio stations Triple RRR, SBS and SYN. Unfortunately, he hated the sound of his own voice, so print journalism was a natural calling.

Lucas Smith: Man of letters, poet and token American, Smith is The Nose's Literary Editor and sits astride the book pages like a young Martin Amis without the video game hobby. He has written for the Australian Book Review, Lifted Brow, Crikey and is a former victim of Farrago, the Melbourne University student magazine.

Geir O'Rourke: O'Rourke edited Farrago in 2011 and barely escaped with his life. After realising that all the best stories are found in the bottom of a pint, he took a spell in the alcohol-soaked offices of Qatari news service Al Jazeera, before returning to Australia to found The Nose.

Adam Brereton: In his day job as Associate Editor of newmatilda.com, Brereton is on the cutting edge in the fast-paced world of 21st century digital journalism. Naturally this gives him insights integral to the running of a monthly print newspaper. He is a former editor of Woroni, the ANU student newspaper.
