Imagine a video-on-demand platform that streams only the best independent films from around the world, where 10% from every rental helps fund the next generation of Australian independent films.

This is what we want to start: a new VOD platform where you can help make great films, just by watching great films. It's called Stream of Films and it's an exciting new way to create a more sustainable film industry.

How does it work? Every year we will put out a call for submissions. Our funding selection committee will then choose films for funding, and we will give those films 10% of our revenue to help bring their visions to life.

Australian stories need to be told. We have fantastic film makers - original voices with fresh ideas - and some of the best crews in the world. But they need support if they are to break through. This is what Stream of Films is about: building a passionate community of independent film lovers who can help our talented film makers bring their stories to the screen.

For our idea to work, we need to provide our audience with the best possible viewing experience. So we will be searching out the best independent and festival films from around the world. This hand-picked selection ensures you will see great independent films every time.

Here are a couple of examples of the types of films we will be showing.


We will also build a state-of-the-art platform, one which is intuitive and easy to use. And you will be able to stream in HD or SD, at prices in line with other VOD services.

By building a reputation as the home of great independent films online we can not only provide an amazing viewing experience for our audience, we can also support the future of Australian film. Because in a marketplace that is fast becoming crowded with mainstream players, we think it's important for Australia to have a VOD platform dedicated to the success of Australian films.

With your support we can make this happen. Pledges of support $50 and over will go in the draw to win a Melbourne or Sydney Film Festival mini-pass or flexi-pass.

How does our funding work?

Every year SoF will put out a call for submissions. Our film selection committee - including some of Australia's most experienced producers - will review submissions and choose films for funding.

Each of our funded films will receive:
> Funding to help with production costs.
> Promotion and marketing to build an audience for their release.
> A non-exclusive 1 year digital distribution agreement on Stream of Films.

While we will be proudly featuring our funded films on our site, we will be working to maximise their revenue across all channels. So we won't be locking any of our films into exclusive agreements and where possible, we will work with distributors to arrange for a theatrical release of their film as well.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Any funds will be used to build a great site! We have spent almost a year researching the technology we need and the costs involved, and building a talented team of designers and developers to bring it all together.

For initial development we require $40k, which will be spent on development, digital rights management and a video-content-management-system (VCMS). In other words, a state-of-the-art platform providing the kind of viewing experience our audience (and our films) deserve.

For example, here's how the interface will look.



Any additional funds will be spent on further development. For example, a film festival catch-up service so you can see all the films you missed at the theatre, and a Smart TV app.

The Challenges

We will be competing against some well-established platforms already in the marketplace. But with your help we can build something that no other VOD platform has: a community of people who are passionate about independent films, for the benefit of our film industry and our shared history.
