Once Upon A Time a folklorist dreamed of an Australian Fairy Tale Society and a storyteller forged the dream into reality... but this is not the story of two people.
The Australian Fairy Tale Society is for ALL who love fairy tales whether you're a writer, artist, storyteller, academic, educator, folklorist, parent* or enthusiast. Our annual conferences will bring together presenters and audiences in a wondrous exploration of fairy tale riches. The theme for this year's inaugural conference is 'The Fairy Tale in Australia' - a nice broad theme to get the ball rolling - with keynote speaker Carmel Bird. Our website will provide the platform for a strong national network, and we will encourage the emergence of local discussion/performance groups across the country.

The AFTS invites you into the deep, dark, wild woods to meet the wolf/dingo, the wise wiccan, the princess ('our Mary' perhaps) and the bogan step-sisters up close.

*While our website will be designed for adults it will also be a wonderful resource for those with children. A place to find stories, discuss your child's experience of them, and so much more.

How The Funds Will Be Used
We don't just want your money! We hope to gather a rich and diverse collection of fairy tale folklore to preserve in a public archive. Did the fairy tales you grew up with differ from Disney's? We want to hear about them. Does Grandma tell a bawdy version of Little Red Riding Hood? Record her (with permission of course) and send it in. Has someone in the family knitted a Cinderella doll for the kids? Take a photo - we want to share it.
As well as collecting folklore, our new national website will promote current events, share fairy tale news, inspire new works, and encourage a strong network of fairy tale lovers.
Your payment will go towards loading up our fabulous website with amazing fairy tale content from all around Australia. Currently the AFTS has a web page on an existing website but we will launch our own national website at the inaugural conference on Monday 9th June. We will upload videos, podcasts, articles and stories from across the land, as a way of building our collection and strengthening our networks. The website will include members' only access to some material, including a forum.
A Sydney discussion/performance group will also be launched at the conference, and we will encourage similar groups to sprout up in your local area.
