Hello.

There’s something we need to talk about.

In November 2014, eight directors are going to stage eight plays from around the world over two weeks. These directors have selected a story they’re burning to tell you.

Introducing the eight directors:
Shaun Charles
Caroline Dunphy
Linda Hassall
Catarina Hebbard
Todd Macdonald
Steven Mitchell Wright
Glyn Roberts
Lucas Stibbard

They want to show you a little somethin’ somethin’ that you haven’t seen before.

They want to push themselves to play with some big ideas.

They want to give you something to leave you rattled, leave you breathless, frantically in search of a drink, or stone still.

Sounds adventurous, right? Hold that thought.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Each play, on average, will involve 2 – 6 actors. That’s around, on average, 32 actors. Throw in a crew, some volunteers and the playwrights whose work we’re performing and you’re looking at a troupe of around 50 people. None of these people are getting an upfront fee. We’re going to split the box office post-season (we told you we were adventurous).

But what we do need is money to bank-roll this baby. Money for things like royalties (writers eat too), music (so does Beyonce), light (so you can see), paint (so we can colour the stage), posters (so you can stick one up on your wall for all your friends to see) and gaff tape (to hold the whole thing together).

We need to talk about you being our patron. We need to talk about you throwing us 10… 20… 50… 100 (!!!).

We need to talk about us – that’s you as well – creating a two week repertory of work filled with tough talk, quiet heartbreak and revolutionary ideas.

Seriously.

We cannot do this without you.

So what do you say?

Let’s take a risk.

Slip us some coin.

Take a goodie or two.

And let’s create some theatre, together.

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $4000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.

The Challenges

The challenge for an independent producer is to cash-flow work. Directors, actors, designers and crew will invest their time (and, consequently, money) in a project to interrogate their craft and extend their skill-set.

Raising funds to secure royalties for written work and generating money to buy basic production necessities (all hail Gaff Tape) is difficult. In fact, it can be downright disheartening to crunch a preliminary budget and realise the project is less a hill, and more a mountain.

This is not about applying for the rights to Les Miserables or purchasing luxurious design items (there will be no chandelier) but basic things we need to open a safe and good-looking space for you to enter into and be provoked/ challenged and, maybe, changed. If even just a little bit.
