CaSFFA 2014 - Join the Resistance!
After a fabulously intimate first year in Melbourne, we’re now planning the 2nd Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia (CaSFFA) and this year we’re expanding to Sydney.
Melbourne: 21 - 29 August, ACMI Cinemas, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square and Yarra Gallery
Sydney: 2 - 7 September, Dendy Newtown, the University of Technology, Sydney, and Conny Dietzschold Gallery
We have our dates, venues, and some wonderful films locked in, but we need your support to make this entirely volunteer-run not-for-profit event viable and sustainable, and to assist us in creating something even bigger and better than last year.
Says CaSFFA’s Artistic Director Cerise Howard, “It seems fitting in Australia’s bleak economic and social climate – with budget attacks on the poor, the old and the Arts – that we are calling on all lovers of culture, and in particular Central and Eastern European cinema, to come out in a spirit of Resistance to help make our festival possible.”
The warm and inclusive theme for our first festival was ‘Togetherness’, but this year we want to pack even more of a punch with the theme of RESISTANCE. Join us in our quest for freedom; for the right to see fine films from Central and Eastern Europe, and of course the right to party – all with the unique accents and world-famous hospitality of the region!

The Program
While the complete program is yet to be announced – and is dependent on funding – some highlights are already confirmed.
New program announcements:
CaSFFA's opening night film is the charming and surprising directorial debut of actor Jiří Mádl, To See the Sea (Pojedeme k moři), the story of a young boy who receives a video camera for his birthday and decides to shoot a film in the style of Miloš Forman, unwittingly uncovering a big family secret.
TO SEE THE SEA Trailer from Bio Illusion on Vimeo.
From director Jitka Rudolfová, Delight (Rozkoš), a film about love, art and obsession, included in the just announced "East of the West" competition strand at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
(Apologies for the trailer without English subtitles. We're trying to source a new one).
We will also be featuring a digital restoration of the 1966 Slovak Film Before Tonight Is Over (Kým sa skončí táto noc), directed by Peter Solan, the observation of a handful of characters in a trendy nightclub, viewing snapshots of their lives, in true Czechoslovak New Wave style. (Trailer is without English subtitles).
There will be more new program announcements coming soon!
And of course we’re still looking forward to bringing you Burning Bush (Hořící keř), the Czech Lion-winning HBO Europe miniseries from Oscar-nominated Polish director Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa). This three-part miniseries is based on the true story of the personal sacrifice of a Prague history student, Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.

2014 also marks the 80th birthday of revered Surrealist artist, animator and filmmaker Jan Švankmajer. The festival will celebrate his work with a highly anticipated retrospective. Co-presented in Melbourne with the Melbourne Cinémathèque at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and in Sydney at the University of Technology, Sydney, films in both cities include his features Alice (1987) and Conspirators of Pleasure (1996) as well as collections of his extraordinary shorts.

In addition to the films, the festival hopes to bring you some extraordinary art, photographic and sculpture exhibitions which tie in both with the Švankmajer retrospective and the theme of Resistance. These include: Jan Švankmajer: ‘Dimensions of Dialogue / Between Film and Fine Art – a combination of text and images organised by Czech Centres, with concept and text by Švankmajer's fellow members of the Group of Czech-Slovak Surrealists; and Conspirators - an exhibition of sculptural works by local Australian artists, which forms an international dialogue with the rich themes and irresistible tactility of Švankmajer’s oeuvre.
How The Funds Will Be Used
Running a film festival entails a variety of unavoidable costs such as screening rights for films, cinema hire and marketing to reach out to cinephiles, as well as to the significant Czech and Slovak communities in Sydney, Melbourne and surrounds.
We are aiming to raise a minimum of $11,000 which will be distributed equally between the Sydney and Melbourne events. While the festival is going ahead regardless of our Pozible campaign, we need your help to make it POP!
• Screening rights for extra films: $2000
• Cinema hire and extra running costs: $2500
• Visual art exhibitions (gallery hire and printing) including Jan Švankmajer art exhibition: $2000
• Marketing and advertising: $1500
• Program printing and designing: $3000
Stretch Goal: Any additional funds raised will be used to import and accommodate some very special international guests to accompany their films and give Q&A screenings. This would greatly enrich the program and give our audiences a unique face-to-face experience with the creators.
The Challenges
We believe that the fine tradition of filmmaking and animation within Czechoslovakia, and the two republics that afterwards emerged, make CaSFFA a distinctive event unlike any other in Australia.
These are tough economic times, creating a difficult sponsorship environment, with many businesses and individuals fiscally stretched already. But we are a festival with a big heart and a unique flavour and believe our film-loving friends and Czech and Slovak supporters will Join the Resistance to help us to build a sustainable and ongoing festival.
