Australia's crowdsourced magazine is all about love...for life, music, art, culture, fashion and most importantly, for writing.

Named after one of the first forward thinking and inspirational English, female, professional writers, Aphra Behn, Aphra Magazine is written for the crowd by the crowd. Our open format allows anyone and everyone to contribute. Every issue has its own unique personality and flavour.

Originating as a Tasmanian based online magazine in March 2013, Aphra Magazine has evolved into a nationwide online publication covering events all around Australia with writers based in almost every capital city. Today, we have firmly established ourselves as a monthly online publication.

Check out Aphra Magazine ONLINE here!

Our next goal however, is to expand this platform to offer our dedicated writers a chance to be published in a print publication. Our long-term aim is to produce a bi-annual print edition of our magazine with all new and exclusive content.

In order to achieve this goal, we need your help!

Our writers’ work extremely hard each month to produce content for each and every one of our valuable readers and providing them the opportunity to be published in print is a reward close to our hearts.

So what makes us different from the rest?
Aphra was founded purely on passion.
Falling in love with the ideal of journalism, having a voice and the fourth estate, it was disappointing to see that the reality didn't live up to the dream.

We decided it was time to do something about the future of journalism and we took it into our own hands.

Aphra Magazine gives the crowd a voice. Not only do we encourage anyone and everyone to submit pieces, we also hope that we inspire engagement with topical issues.

We admire the underdog, the creative, the inspirational, the cultural and as a collective, we want to share that with you. We would rather delve into an issue than get 'the scoop'.

We bring you more than your standard!

Aphra Magazine not only brings you features that'll leave you wanting more; profiles on people you want to know and insights that you didn't know you wanted to know but we also give to you a music section that will blow your mind; more arts & culture than you could ever desire and a style section that would put Carrie Bradshaw to shame.

We are independent, idealistic, environmentally conscious, politically orientated, eternally curious and bloody good writers.

Why should you support us and most importantly, what do you get out of this?
We believe that there is a gap in the magazine market that Aphra can and will fill. We want to create a magazine that YOU want to read, one that we are all proud of.
Helping us fund the first edition of our bi-annual print will mean we are set for every issue after that. We produce the magazine for you and will strive to give you everything we've got! We truly believe that we can make a difference.

If you’re looking for something a little different, a little quirky, something that doesn’t quite fit the current mould, Aphra is your magazine.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The move to print was a big call for us, as we knew the process was going to be very costly. Although we are yet to confirm the exact cost of producing our first print edition, we've been quoted a minimum of $10,000 for our initial production run. We have set a target of $7500 with the intention that this will cover most of our design and printing expenses. These expenses however are not the only cost we've had to consider.  The distribution of the print magazine will also be an expensive aspect of the transition, however we have attempted to minimise this by adding postage costs into the reward prices.

The Challenges

There is one major challenge we have identified in the transition to our first print publication and this is selling advertising.  Our tagline - writing for love - is built on the ideal that we should not let money affect our art. However this is an idealistic view and in reality, money is something we now have to consider in order to maintain our high quality and increase our distribution and readership.
This will be a challenge, but NOT an obstacle for our dedicated team.  Our business team led by co-founder Ellie Oddie-Jones is currently working hard on developing our marketing relationships to this end.
