PROJECT UPDATE!!!

Thank you for helping us reach our first target of $10k! Because of your generous support Coast Totems is now really going to happen!

Make sure you put the exhibition dates (23 Oct - 9 Nov) in your diaries to get down and check out in the flesh what you’ve been a co-creator of! Without each and every one of you this wouldn’t have been achievable. We are so happy and so very grateful to you all.

NEW TARGET $15K - NEW REWARDS - IN THE HOPE TO GET TO COTTESLOE 2015

SCULPTURE BY THE SEA COTTESLOE

We have been offered the opportunity to present ‘Coast Totems’ at Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe, Western Australia in 2015! Now that we’ve reached our first target, we’re hoping to raise enough extra to send ‘Coast Totems’ to WA. So please keep spreading the word about our Pozible campaign

NEW REWARDS!

Our boss, Shaun Carter, has kindly donated a second Architectural concept design service to help us get to Cottesloe! So if you know of anyone who is considering an architect, let them know it’s available at a 50% discount (valued at $5’500, on the Pozible for just $2’750)

THE STORY OF THE PROJECT

Sculpture by the Sea is the largest outdoor sculpture event in the world. The exhibition will run from the 23rd of October through to the 9th of November and attracts over 500,000 visitors each year. Without doubt it is one of the highlights on the world's art calendar and we are excited to have been invited to exhibit at this year's event.

COAST TOTEMS is the title of our artwork – three mirror-finish stainless steel columns reflecting large circular anamorphic images of iconic Bondi scenes at their base will be installed on the headland directly above Tamarama Beach in Sydney.

Pozible is a 'all or nothing' campaign, if we don't reach our target we don't receive the funding.

WHY WE NEED SUPPORT?
Making and transporting Coast Totems is an expensive undertaking. We are not for profit and without your support Coast Totems won't get to Tamarama. All the money we raise will go directly towards the purchasing of materials, fabrication and the installation costs of the sculpture. So please dig deep and contribute as much as you can.

WHAT IS ANAMORPHOSIS?

Anamorphosis is a technique developed in the Renaissance as a play upon the mathematics of linear perspective, which had originally been invented by Brunelleschi in Florence in 1492. Originally it was used to conceal the content of images that were either politically sensitive or sexually explicit. In these cases the anamorphic image (below right) could produce the ‘correct image’ (below left) if the viewer stood in a particular viewing position.

WHY USE ANAMORPHOSIS?

Coast Totems is a site-specific artwork that actually reverses this 15th C technique. In this case, instead of concealing the content of the Bondi images, the giant, distorted, anamorphic images release the hidden qualities of the local area by revealing a new world of forms and colours that people see daily, yet never really see because it is all so familiar. The anamorphic image is then ‘re-formed’ as a normal image reflected in the mirrored surface of the column. Coast Totems is also an interactive sculpture because by being part of the pedestrian walkway itself, the passer-by is literally merged into this new landscape.

HOW DO YOU MAKE AN ANAMORPHIC TOTEM?
The three totems are constructed from high-grade Swedish stainless steel, which is then polished to a mirror finish. Distorted images of local Bondi scenes form a large circular image platform at the base of each column. These images are then reflected in the cylindrical surface of the columns and re-presented in their ‘correct’ form.

We have tested our process with digital and physical modelling, and we are now ready to create the full scale sculpture. Using anamorphic software, the images of Bondi are blended and distorted to create large circular mats.

How The Funds Will Be Used

We have been fortunate enough to obtain material support for some of the costs of Coast Totem.

Sandvik Metals have donated 6m of stainless steel pipe that will be used to create the sculptures.

VFX Print Group have donated material support for the 3 printed image matts that will display the distorted image.

An additional $10k is needed to realise the three sculptures;

A big thank you to the generous material and professional supporters who are supporting our project;
