*** MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt - successfully funded in under 8 hours! STILL AVAILABLE AS A REWARD! ***

It's time to up the ante - SO LET'S DO THIS. And by "this" I mean RECORDING 'THE LAST GIG IN MELBOURNE' - my fifth album!!!

WE CRACKED $5K! So I made you an update.

An original suite of songs about the death of the live music industry, and a celebration of its past, here is the third Pozible film explaining the show a little more. 'The Last Gig In Melbourne' was MDed by the mighty Casey Bennetto, was the recipient of a City of Melbourne Arts Grant, was first performed in 2011, got some lovely reviews and won an award so I am THRILLED this is moving forward at last!

And here is a review quote from the original show in 2011: “Powerhouse vocals, clever lyrics and complete and utter rock’n’roll spirit. There are few people with enough cred, talent and moxy to claim the right to the last gig in Melbourne, but Quinn has definitely earned the honour” Theatrepress (2011)

And here is a picture of the me SINGING IT:

So what are the songs?

Audience Tonight   (my love letter to the live audience)
Do Yourself a Favour    (prog rock tribute to Molly & Countdown)
Stay Broken    (ballad written one dark Edinburgh Fringe)
In My Tribe     (Beatles-esque pop song about finding your people as a teen)
$12 Cover Charge 2 Drink Minimum Love     (for anyone who has harboured an unrequited crush in a club)
Just Drunk Enough To Dance      (Motown tinged confession of some terrible things to a catchy beat)
Time To Go To The Peel    (for anyone who remembers getting turfed out of an early closer in Fitzroy/Collingwood in the 2000s)
Scragfight on Swanston Street    (power rock quickie about 1970s Sharpies)
Happening Now    (for anyone who has had a gig marred by a tit holding their phone up and filming the show)
The Last Gig In Melbourne  (guess what - you can listen to the VERY flangey bootleg live version of the title song here!)

You can still watch the 2nd Pozible film where I get teary here, and below is the original MDMA spiel, with biog - WE DID IT! AND WE ARE DOING MORE! YOU MADE IT HAPPEN! I'M SORRY I AM SHOUTING!

Hey there Cats and Kittens!

MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt is the seventh original show from rock cabaret idiot Geraldine Quinn (me), and was inspired by my position as the last one of my siblings unmarried and child-free. It's a weird feeling...after all, Jane Austen never married and had 23 nieces and nephews. She wrote some of the greatest novels in the English language. I have 19 nieces and nephews. And I draw rude pictures , write songs about David Bowie and I've wiped many, many bottoms. We are basically the same person. And I thought that deserved to be explored in rip-snortin' rock songs, yeah? So I wrote them, and performed them live at MICF 2014 to terrific reviews and now I have recorded the album! It is a genuine rock explosion with a really big heart and everyone who is sick of people talking about their kids....well, you will understand.

MDMA is just as rocking-yet-heartfelt as my last album 'You're the Voice: Songs for the Ordinary by an Anthemaniac', which was engineered and directed by the incomparable Casey Bennetto, and that received a 5 star review in The Age (Melbourne) and won me a Golden Gibbo Award. Songs include:

MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt
The Kid Is Not That Cute
Don't Call Me A MILF
The Great Invisible Woman

...and MORE!

Here is me awkwardly receiving my Gibbo award alongside lots of famous award-winning people I am proud to know (2011 MICF, photo by Jim Lee. L to R Michael Workman, Wil Anderson, Quinn, Denise Scott and Harley Breen):

So far, I've produced three albums, pretty much on APRA royalty payments and the occasional temp job (currently data-entering recreational fishing licences) and I have already paid for the recording of my fourth album MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt...I just need a little bit of help to get the latest album pressed. It's not much, I promise, and if it goes gangbusters I will be able to put that money towards making a few more film clips for the songs with the amazing team at Stupid Old Studios. They helped me make this a few years ago. Clever, aren't they?

Please help me get these very important songs out to all the other people who get bombarded with information about other people's children. We need the support. We really do. Have you seen Facebook lately? Oh my....also they are balls-out rocking good songs, and I think you'll like them. YAY! Thanks for your time, and if you're skint after a tough Christmas, even sharing the word is helpful. Thanks again!

Biography

Rock comedy cabaret trashbag Geraldine Quinn has performed her original pop/rock songwriting for a decade. As a self-taught songwriter, comedian and musician, Quinn has local and international sell-out audiences in stitches as she (and her occasional band Spandex Ballet) carve up the stage from Melbourne to Edinburgh to Wellington and beyond.

Since winning Victoria’s Green Room Award for Best Emerging Cabaret Artiste (nominated for Original Songs) in 2006, Quinn has continued to draw recognition and plaudits throughout Australia. Winning the Short and Sweet Cabaret competition in 2009, she went on to be highly commended for Best Cabaret at Melbourne Fringe, and was nominated for a Golden Gibbo Award at Melbourne Comedy Festival and three Green Room Awards for her 2010 show Shut Up and Sing.

Quinn has appeared on ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks, Adam Hills Tonight, Rockwiz, Upper Middle Bogan, The Comedy Channel (Stand Up Australia), regularly co-hosts John Faine’s Conversation Hour and has guested on ABC and BBC Radio. She has been a judge of cabaret in Short %20 Sweet and Melbourne Fringe and is a popular guest at Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s showcase Upfront, which she hosted in 2013 and 2014.

At the end of 2011, she wrote and performed (with band) The Last Gig In Melbourne, a unique suite of original songs inspired by the local live music scene (reprised in 2012). The same year,  'You’re the Voice: Songs for the Ordinary by an Anthemaniac' (Moosehead Award recipient, directed by Casey Bennetto) won the Golden Gibbo Award.

In 2013, Stranger debuted in Melbourne Comedy Festival and was nominated for two awards in the New Zealand Fringe Festival (Best Music and Standout Performer 2014), and she took You’re the Voice to Western Australia, Tasmania, Queensland, regional Victoria, New Zealand and Adelaide Fringe (nominated for Best Cabaret). Her rollicking 80s show Sunglasses at Night: The 80s Apocalypse Sing Along Cabaret sold out in Melbourne and Perth (2013-2014) and earned her a third Best Cabaret Artiste nomination in the Green Room Awards. Her second Moosehead Award supported show MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt debuted in 2014 MICF and has been recorded, ready to be pressed.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The Last Gig In Melbourne
All extra funds will go to getting us into a studio and starting the build of the album! I need to pay musicians for 'Last Gig', a lot more of them, so it will take more cash, and more calendar juggling, but I work with amazing people who are terrific at their jobs and deserve every penny. Some independent albums costs tens of thousands, so this will be a cheap one! I will pick up anything the crowdfund doesn't cover, I'm not expecting this to cover it all, but it's a massive help to get it started. HUGE help.

MDMA
Steve Hearne has recorded and engineered and basically played the whole thing, and I've recorded all the lead vocals, and that's all been paid for by myself. The artwork is laid out (did that myself to save cash) and the brilliant illustration by Kate McCartney was included in the original 2014 Moosehead Award season budget. I've paid for the barcode generation - it's only the printing/pressing to go.

So here's the budget breakdown:

$1017 - 500 x cardboard gatefold CD wallets, 500 CD replication (printed on disc).
$483 - Postage, printing and incidentals for campaign

If I end up without a tonne of incidentals/postage/materials to pay for, anything over the $1017 I need to press it will be going to the first clip from the album.

That's it. No really - that is all I need to get it finished.  I'll even pick it up myself to save $27.50 on the courier.

If I am overwhelmed with generosity, that extra cash will go to producing the first film clip from the album, which we are planning to shoot possibly as early as February 2015. Isn't it thrilling??? The answer is a resounding yes!

The Challenges

The biggest problem has always been being able to get the albums of my songs recorded while I am still performing the show. I will be taking MDMA to Adelaide and New Zealand in the new year, and of course, having the album and some online clips to support it are so helpful to get the word out. It's extremely challenging to pitch a show to people when they are not familiar with your work, so getting it recorded and out there in all forms is the biggest hurdle by far.

Well, I've knocked the greatest obstacle on the head already - the album is recorded and mastered and in my hand.

And that would not have been possible without the incredibly hard work and generosity of Steve Hearne, who engineered and recorded it all in his house, and pretty much all on weekends (he works full time). I also have a good team lined up for the first film clip idea, and they are also incredibly talented and very generous and patient people who have done me all sorts of favours over the years. I can't do it without them, or without your help. We always have heaps of ideas for filming my songs, and we always run out of time and money. This is a small way to help take a little bit of pressure off my touring budget (and my equally patient landlord) and get it out there and to all the people who have been so supportive of my original output for so long - and sooner!

Thanks from Quinn!

Quinn will send you a personal thank you through her Pozible, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages! May be more than one person per post but it will be heartfelt and just for YOU(se).
