Hey, howdy, yo, we are MOANA - a group of young musicians, artists, performers, freakshow humans from Western Australia looking for some help to fund our second EP "The Trilogy Of The Black Monsoon".

Some label our sound as "intense psychedelic gothic rock", others "ritualistic weirdness"; a friend once described it as "spooky soul" while another said "music with fangs". We are most regularly related to some mix of Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey and The Doors but a favorite - and probably most close to accurate may have been "dark atmospheric ethereal rock - with a hint of danger..."

▲ THE PROJECT ▲
"The Trilogy Of The Black Monsoon" is our second EP and is a cross-collaborative project that involves the creative synthesis of original music, visual art, video & theatrical live performance. This is ONE EP, released in THREE parts - hence "The Trilogy". Each part sees the release of two songs – deliberately contrasting in mood and meaning, accompanied with a music video, an original artwork based on the two songs and a one-off theatrical live performance at each launch. This will all culminate into a six-track EP with a creative video series and a larger interconnected visual artwork.

The project we are seeking funds for is PART 2 of the trilogy, with some elements of PART 3 included.

We decided to undertake our EP in this unusual way from combining factors of overactive imaginations and big dreams, as well as the desire to push boundaries, take creative risks and challenge our audiences, peers & industry - tired with seeing the same formula over and over and lack of soul and “art” in popularised music.

▲ A BRIEF BACKGROUND ▲
From our director, Moana Lutton: When analysing the band’s latest collection of songs I noticed there were many diverse sounds and musical explorations that could be split into two separate “feelings” or “vibes.” One half is a musically heavier, chaotic, darker side and the other a contrastingly fragile, celebratory, dreamy side. So it's a very diverse and explorative collection of songs. The concept of a ‘black monsoon’ intermixes with these paradoxes as a mystical sticky tropical storm that sees all the elements collide and dance in their most fierce form, followed by the aftermath of stillness and fragility where rebirth and earthly cycles begin, again.

Our debut EP ‘A Mouthful Of Birds’ (April 2014) has been widely praised by peers, reviewers and audiences. The EP charted %234 in X-Press Magazine’s “Reviewers Picks for Top 10 Albums of 2014” in a list that included internationally acclaimed artists. Two music videos were produced in 2014 in collaboration with Via Luna Pictures, with ‘The Killer, My Girl’ being nominated for ‘Best Video’ in the recent WAM Awards. We have played at renowned local festivals such as In The Pines, WAM Festival and Beaufort St Festival, and self-funded a tour in October playing shows in Melbourne and Sydney, and we were most recently listed on national music site Tone Deaf’s article “15 Incredible Unsigned Aussie Bands You Need To Hear Right Now”. So we are legit, passionate and so so excited to get our new stuff into the world!

▲ CROWD-FUNDING ▲
Like all independent musicians, it is a struggle for us to make enough money from our art to fund the creative work we want to do. Recording, mixing and mastering songs in a 'proper' professional studio is an important step for us to take, and this comes at a cost. Similarly, with top-quality music video work, visual art & promotion of the work. We have self-funded PART 1 of the EP (you can see what we're on about) and are reaching out to YOU our AMAZING audience to help us with PART 2.
