THE SHOW
Saltwater invites you into an evening of storytelling, conversations, and food.
In a quick turnaround, Jamie finds herself married and migrated. To make things work, she channels the women in her life to find the answers.
Saltwater is a poignant account of home as she grapples with the gravity of being a wife 6060km away.
Sit with strangers at her dinner table, participate in the preparation of a meal, and travel through memories of Singapore, childhood, and lessons learnt as Jamie remembers her mother, revealing the inner world of a woman as she responds to loss, grief, love and commitment. It’s been a little over a year and a half, and we are very excited to be presenting this work in Theatre Works in Melbourne (1-12 July), and a yet to be announced season in Brisbane later on!
Saltwater started as a personal reflection; when getting married and migrating happened so quickly and all at once, I was overwhelmed. My mother was right. “Marriage is hard work,” she had said. And to make sense of it all, I wrote. And as I wrote, I now have a story to share.

MY ARTISTIC PRACTICE AND BEYOND
Saltwater is an expression and a conversation of this journey since. And a conversation it continues to be as Saltwater develops from my shorter, participatory one-on-one works. Saltwater challenges me to connect in a similar manner, but with more audience members; to revisit theatre conventions I haven’t used in a while; and to write a full-length work.
Having Ling on board as Managing Producer from the very get-go was key to the entire project as we keep in mind the life of the work - building networks nationally and internationally towards touring Saltwater, and to find a way to bring this back to Singapore. The two upcoming seasons, as well as the ones that we are dreaming of, are products of long, hard, but very exciting and fulfilling work. Metro Arts has greatly supported Saltwater since its development stages. Along the way, Theatre Works have come on board. And as I gather the rest of the team and approach production, I am humbly rallying the support from my creative community and beyond to push the seasons over the line, and to share this story of Saltwater.

How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds raised from your generous support will go towards the key operational elements of the work.FREIGHT | As a work travelling interstate, transportation cost is a huge expense.
TRAVEL & PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE | To keep us all safe.
DESIGN | We are investing in the design and construction of a set that is tour-friendly. This means a large round table that packs down, is as light as it can be, and looks great, amongst other elements for the space.
REHEARSAL VENUE | Space. ‘Nuff said. We’ve managed to negotiate a fair amount of in-kind support, but want to be able to return the generosity with token sums.
CONSUMABLES | This work feeds you. And this work is made and rehearsed through trial runs where we feed you each time. Our grocery list is consistent.
APRA & FOOD LICENSING | To do the right thing.
The Challenges
We are determined to pay our full team the fees they well deserve. With the support of our presenting partners, we have been provided set artist fees and we need to ensure these remain untouched. We hope this campaign will help us cross this bridge. We will also look into sponsorship agreements with produce suppliers to help reduce costs.
FATIGUE!
Each night of the season has multiple showings. This presents the challenge of fatigue over the course of the season. I will deal with this through strong planning procedures in the lead up to the show and through giving my team and our supportive networks the resources and structure to run independently and at their full capacity.
LIMITED EXPOSURE!
As this is my first season within Melbourne, my networks are somewhat limited which runs the risk of slow-building ticket sales and a large trust in Word of Mouth. I have brought a Marketing liaison on board to support these efforts and to engage with as many new networks as possible. I would like this work to engage with a wider community, specifically one that does not necessarily attend theatre often.
SPECIAL THANK YOU
