KANE - A Short Film
Set in 1980s rural Victoria, KANE is a terrifying portrayal of resentful youth and young manhood that explores the links between isolation, fear and violence.

“What happens when an environment creates an individual, then blames that individual for what it has become?”
Our pre-production is well underway and we have already secured all heads of department, several locations and are beginning to cast. We will be filming from July 8-12th 2015 in the picturesque Victorian town of Lancefield.

Director's Statement
I also wanted to create a paradoxical protagonist. Kane is young, vulnerable and real but troubled and, when backed into a corner, capable of heinous actions. I want to challenge the audience to relate to or empathise with such a character, as I believe as a society we tend to conveniently package people into the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ pile – life’s not so black and white. It’s a dangerous position for the audience, as we must then acknowledge our own ability for such acts of violence.
Ultimately, the film is a dramatisation that intends to terrify like a classic horror, contrasted with the stark reality of the characters and the environment.
Most of the visual inspiration, characters and experiences the film is based on is from 1980s rural Victoria, and I wanted to stay true to that and, while this kind of story could take place in contemporary Australia, I think the period lends itself perfectly to the themes. The town and the environment become a character of their own.
“The way you see people is the way you treat them, and the way you treat them is what they become”
“There is no crime of which I do not deem myself capable"

How The Funds Will Be Used
- Location costs (hiring of locations, agreements, safety control)
- Transport and accommodation costs for cast and crew
- The hire of lighting and sound equipment
- The hire of professional lighting technicians and a sound recordist
- Prop and costumes design and creation
- Post-production sound and colour-grade
- Catering for the cast and crew
- And much, much more!
A significant portion of the money will also be spent locally in Lancefield on things such as location fees, accommodation and catering. We'll also be looking to involve some kids from the local area in the film - a great opportunity that doesn't often come about for country kids.
Below is a breakdown of how we will use these funds.
Camera & Lighting: $3,000
Sound: $1,000
Production Design: $3,000
Costume / Make Up: $500
Locations & Safety: $1,000
Catering: $1,000
The Challenges
Being able to create the film we want on a limited budget is a challenge in itself. But we don't like to think if this as a challenge, we think of it as a opportunity.
Other opportunities we are working through include;
Sourcing locations - The Victorian countryside is the backdrop of this film and we want to source and hire authentic locations in and around Lancefield. Your money will help us with this challenge.
Finding crew - We want to find the best crew for as little money as possible and allow them to work to the best of their abilities under tight restrictions.
Casting - finding the right cast to bring this story to life is always difficult, they may not be based in Melbourne.
Distribution - Finally, bringing the film to audiences through screenings and festivals is an exciting opportunity for us, but also has it's challenges.
See the 'how the funds will be used' section below for more information on how we will use funds to make KANE happen!
