Sample. magazine is a resource to showcase a selection of the best print design projects from around the world.
By definition, Sample. gives examples of print design projects to inform, educate and inspire students, designers and business owners alike.
Sample. is an independent and international magazine published three times a year by PrintTogether in Melbourne, Australia. It is published as a digital download, as well as a limited-edition perfect-bound magazine printed on 100% recycled paper. The printed magazine is available exclusively as a pre-sale through Pozible; printed copies will not be available for sale after production.

Inside Issue 001.
In Issue 001. we start at the very beginning, investigating identity design. We chat with 20 of the best print designers from 13 different countries around the world.
Consisting of 128 pages of content, Issue 001. looks at identity projects from start to finish. We explore pre-project, how each came about, and meeting clients’ briefs and budgets.
We go beyond portfolio pictures, delving deeper to discuss the ideas behind concepts – the unseen thinking and research that goes into design projects.
We also take a practical look at processes – how designs are developed, fonts specified, and materials and finishes utilised.
Finally, we look at results and the value of design in creating successful identities.

How The Funds Will Be Used
We need $9000 to produce the first edition of Sample. as both a digital download (PDF and epub for iPad) and also a limited-edition perfect-bound printed version. The money raised from Pozible will fund half of this. PrintTogether will fund the remainder, dollar for dollar. Any additional funds raised will go towards advertising and marketing the magazine.
The Challenges
It may seem ironic to predominantly offer a digital download for a magazine specially looking at print design. The truth is, this is where we are at with modern-day printing. Fewer magazine and newspapers are being printed, with an ever-increasing amount of content going online. This, however, doesn’t mean print is dead – far from it. What it means is that print is becoming more specialised and unique. Designing for print is becoming even more interesting and creative as a result. Printed items are becoming fewer in number, but higher in value and quality. It is for this reason we will only print a limited edition of each issue; we do not wish to create waste.
That being said, there are clear advantages in going digital – cost being the most obvious. But there are even bigger and better reasons to go online with publishing, such as environmental sustainability. Digital downloads reduce the amount of paper and resources required. They also reduce transportation and enable distribution to anywhere in the world via an internet connection. We truly want to share ideas and discuss how design reflects and informs the world around us.
