Originally supported by The Blue Room Theatre, ‘Become a Functional Adult in 45 Minutes’ enjoyed a sold out season with rave reviews at Perth’s Fringe World Festival earlier this year. Now we’re hitting the road and Team Functional Adult need your help to get to the Melbourne and Sydney Fringe Festivals in September!



This show is the product of a degree in Performance Studies, four years of experience in stand-up comedy, two years of experience in improvisation and a healthy dose of neuroses! It’s the story of a borderline incompetent woman-child trying to prove to the audience but most of all herself that she has what it takes to be a proper grown-up.


Watch with fascination, amusement and occasionally horror as her social skills, employability, body and very mind are put to the test by her cruel mechanical mistress, the Operating System.


It’s a theatre show, informational seminar, comedic romp and cautionary tale rolled in to one. But most of all, it’s a relatable, bizarre look at what it really means to grow up, complete with educational videos and handy tricks to help us all be a bit more functional.


We need a your help to make sure that myself (writer and performer Sophie Joske) and production manager, Nick Pages-Oliver, can transport ourselves to and from Sydney and Melbourne, hire a venue in each city and have somewhere to stay.

Our fundraising goal is to cover the upfront costs of taking the show to Melbourne and Sydney. While we’ve got out flights and half our accommodation covered, we also need:


* The other half of our accommodation costs: we need to house ourselves somewhere when we’re not performing so we don’t need to sleep on the tram!


* Venue Hire: We’ll be working in some exciting spaces in both Sydney and Melbourne that house emerging artists. We’re performing five shows in Sydney and six in Melbourne, so we need to cover the hire of the space itself, and technical necessities including sound, lighting and a video projector.

Although it’s going to be awesome, it’s also going to be hard. While we sold out in Perth, we won’t have the advantage of being on home ground in Sydney and Melbourne so we’ll be working as hard as we can to bring in an audience and make it count! Also, venue hire and accommodation aren’t cheap and we really need those things to put on the show!
