It’s been a year.

Brett’s home from jail. His world has changed and he’s determined to take it back.

Inspired by the all too real abduction, rape and murder of Anita Cobby in the mid-1980s, Graham Gordon’s The Boys is an unflinching examination of a heinous crime. It is a seminal work of Australian theatre and an essential narrative in our national consciousness.

The Boys delves headlong into the lives of a troubled family splintering under the weight of dysfunction and the hopelessness that pervades their existence. Shifting its focus between a tense, long-awaited afternoon reunion in the backyard of the Sprague family, to its devastating aftermath, the play puts us face to face with the nightmare lurking within the Australian dream.

The Sprague family are a chilling reminder of the dark side of our larrikin, rebellious Australian identity.

Black Water Theatre is proud to be launching their company with this iconic Australian play, and a cast including some of Australia’s most anticipated new talent. Twice ACCTA/AFI Best Supporting Actress nominee Laura Wheelwright (Animal Kingdom, Underground: The Julian Assange Story), and Sarah Grace (Winners and Losers). The young cast will be led by noted actress Ally Fowler (Sons and Daughters, Neighbours, The Chantoozies).

As part of Black Water Theatre’s mission statement, the company has pledged to donate a portion of profits to a charity or cause that correlates with the themes and ideas of the piece. For this production of The Boys, Black Water Theatre will be donating 10% of all ticket sales to the White Ribbon foundation in support of their efforts to eliminate violence against women.

The Boys will be performed in The Studio at Revolt Artspace, Kensington.

What this Pozible Campaign will support

The aim for our Pozible fundraiser is to cover the costs of our venue and performing rights, enabling us to stretch our budget further and increase our production values on things like set and costume design. It also helps to enable us to ensure our fabulous, generous cast and crew are rewarded for all their valuable time and hard work. For without this, we wouldn't be able to bring you the incredible production this promises to be.

Our Story
Black Water is a company birthed out of a passion for ‘the work’ and was conceptualised by co-founders Michael Argus and Brooke Aust in 2012 as a vessel for creating art that inspires both performer and viewer.

Black Water comes from a concept explored by John Patrick Shanley in ‘The Dreamer Examines His Pillow’ It is a metaphor for the subconscious. The place from which we reach in and pull out the unknown, the curious, the deeply human, the bizarre and the hilarious. The wondrous artistic playground.

Our Mission
To fully embody our role as artists in the community by providing a selfless commitment to stories that are relevant, human, and engaging. We are passionate about giving back to the community by promoting awareness and support around current issues as well as providing a space for contemporary artists to explore their craft.

We will constantly strive to have the courage to speak the truth, the curiosity to explore the work, the humanity to give back and the humility to remember our responsibility.
