The Story:
Bathrooms is a short film set entirely in a suburban family bathroom.
The deteriorating family bathroom becomes the site of secrecy for Alex, a 16 year old boy, consumed by his own fear of death. Alex detaches himself from his family, retreating into the bathroom to check and re-check the symptoms of his self-diagnosed disease.
But Alex’s paranoia is not unique within his family. The bathroom they share infects and contaminates in more than just a physical sense. It is infested with anxiety, isolation and misdiagnosis.
When Alex unexpectedly finds himself confronting the reality of death, he is forced to choose between his fears and his family. A bathroom door is flung open and in facing each other, the family finally begins to face itself.
Us:
Bathrooms is written/directed by Angeline Armstrong (HELLO there! Thanks for stopping by :) I also happen to be producing the film but feel I have too many credits, so have decided to include that small detail within these subtle and inconspicuous brackets...) Over the last three years she has released an original EP with her band, written and directed two short films, a music video, a play, spied on countless budding film directors under the guise of 'art department assist' in order to learn from the best, travelled to Europe and completed 1.5 years of her Media & Communications degree at RMIT University. Bathrooms is her baby, her big little film. (Why am I speaking in third person?) She's going to submit it into film festivals all over Australia, the world and perhaps another galaxy or two.
Josh Mitchell-Frey is our (inconceivably clever) cinematographer. In 2012 he was the cinematographer on Tropfest finalist 'The Hustle'; several short films including Jack & Sally, Thy Will Be Done, Black and White Lines and Letting Go; the camera operator for L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and Melbourne Spring Fashion Week; as well as being the cinematographer on numerous music videos and corporate projects with Monster and Bear Productions.
Jacqueline Miller is our Production Designer/set builder/props master/circular-saw-operator/crazy-good-at-everything-erer. I cannot believe one singular human being can have such a knack for all things set-related. She is the epitome of a great art department in singular form. In 2012 she was Art Director on VCA graduate film Jack and Sally; Props Master on award-winning VCA Honours film Hungry Man; and Art Dep. Assist on the feature adaptation of Crime & Punishment and the 2012 Tropfest Winner We’ve All Been There.
Jessica Yu according to wikipedia, is an American film director, writer, producer and editor. For the record, she's also won an Academy Award (*I may or may not have accidentally linked the wrong Jessica). Jess is the Artistic Advisor on Bathrooms. From colour palettes to wardrobe to set dressing to script editor, Jess plays a key role in helping shape the overall cinematic style of the film. She's also a great pal to watch Wes and French New Wave with. Thank heavens for Jess.
Annie Pham, our ever assertive production manager, has been crucial in ensuring everything (from casting to budget to scheduling coffee dates with potential crew) has run smoothly and efficiently. Annie graduated from the VCA in 2012. She's a genius and very funny. Without her, I would not have moved on from my first dot point on my to-do-list (i.e. Dot point #1: 'Write a to-do-list').
Andrew Fenaughty is our thorough, organised and devoted 1st AD. He has worked as a Producer, Production Manager, Floor Manager and 1st Assistant Director. He has previously been employed in both the public and private sector in Community Development and Sales and Marketing positions and has worked as a 1st AD on live-to-air television and short film.
Fun Facts:
#1 We're shooting on RED (for those of you who have no idea what that means...Here's a list of films shot on RED)
#2 We're building a set from scratch in a theatre space doubling as a film studio.
#3 The shoot dates are July 10th-14th.
#3 We have a red claw-foot bathtub for the bathroom (it's amazing).
#4 This film is going to look real pretty.
Where The Money Goes:
The $2000 raised through Pozible will go towards the production design (set costs), equipment hire and to feeding our lovely cast and crew, who are all dedicating their time and skills to the project for free. Camera hire, lighting hire and a substantial portion of production design costs, have already been covered by our own finances. We just need to raise a teeny bit more to reach the cinematic standard we're aiming for (and feed everyone over our intensive five day shoot!).
If the campaign raises more than the target amount, any excess will go towards our post production, festival submissions and postage, and DVD production.
