Splendid Chaps is a year-long podcast project celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. Each month, hosts Ben McKenzie, John Richards and Petra Elliott, along with sound engineer David Ashton, find a venue, invite some guests, and have a nerdy, funny, irreverent panel discussion about one of the eleven Doctors and a theme - like Women, Fear, Family or Sex - across the fifty-year history of Doctor Who. Where other Doctor Who podcasts talk to Doctor Who experts, we try to talk to actors, comedians, writers, academics, musicians and others to find a new angle on this unique show we all love. And we always finish with a song!
We're based in Melbourne, so nearly all our shows have been recorded there - but some of our listeners have let us know they’d love us to bring the fun and discussion of Splendid Chaps up north. A Pozible campaign seemed the perfect way to discover if there's enough of an audience to cover the cost of touring, so if we reach our goal we'll record a Sydney show! The plan is to hold the recording on Saturday, November 30th, one week after the 50th anniversary.
We're already planning and scheming, contacting venues, and potential guests - including comedian Alice Fraser and Steven "Bajo" O'Donnell, host of the ABC's Good Game (subject to availability)! We'll keep you updated with developments as the date gets closer.
As with all our other shows, the podcast will be released free after it's recorded, but the live audience will hear lots that will be cut out, be able to ask us questions, and even win prizes! In short, it's a Splendid Chaps show just like the ones you already know and love - just a few hundred kilometres closer to the equator.

The Challenges
We’re well acquainted with the process of producing a live Splendid Chaps show, and have several times made all arrangements for a show within the space of a month. For the Sydney show we have already been contacting venues and potential guests. While we’ve built in a buffer of almost a whole month between the end of this campaign and the show, there’s always the chance that guests will not be able to confirm or will have commitments that come up in between us contacting them and being able to confirm the show is going ahead. We have dealt with this in the past, however, and have contingency plans to perform a musical number ourselves, and call in backup guests as needed. We will also have backup venue plans in case a venue is unable to accommodate us at short notice.
In terms of the campaign, it is possible we could sell more than our estimated venue capacity of tickets; if this happens, we plan to organise a second performance on the day (the extra income should cover extra guests) to make sure every who buys a ticket can make it.
