"ROCK IN A HARD PLACE" A ROCK DOCUMENTARY - 30 years of South Australian Underground original music. 1978 – 2012   56 min

Our Goal is to raise $10,000 through pozible crowd funding but to complete the film will need more like $25,000. The difference, we hope will be made up from fundraising events, sponsorship and funding bodies.

SYNOPSIS :

This film is a celebration and a tribute to South Australian original music, from the perspective of Adelaide's underground pub rock scene. The stories are memories told through the eyes of the musicians themselves and other local music supporters.

This film intends to acknowledge as many original SA bands as possible and to pay tribute to the DIYers who’s continuous efforts over the past 30 years to support, encourage and celebrate this particular music scene.

Its about a generation of musicians who grew up in Adelaide South Australia and those people who embraced the "do it yourself" Attitude after being Inspired as youths by the punk movement back in the late 70s. This punk attitude was often the driving force behind many teens of the times around the world to want to start bands, set up public radio stations, record labels and DIY music fanzines. Here in Adelaide it was no passing fad, after 30 years these same people are now in their 40s and 50s, still playing in bands, still volunteering at the public radio station and still churning out their local music fanzines.

The sheer longevity of the commitment and the efforts made by these people who are driven by their passion for local music has helped create something unique in Adelaide, something you wont easily find anywhere else, especially in a much bigger city. In this creative tight knit music community, South Australian musicians are in a unique position to live in a town where all local bands have the opportunity to have their music played on the radio, at no cost, with no prejudges and not just once in a blue moon but many times and often for many years.

People such as Harry Butler, (the creator of the DNA Fanzine on local music) who has documented the scene for over 30 years, Doug Thomas of Greasy Pop Records who financed the production of a vast amount of vinyl records for many Adelaide bands - To the Volunteers at Three D Radio who’s commitment to broadcast local music has surpassed any other radio station possibly in the world. Three D has become the backbone of the original music culture of Adelaide.

And to the many others who were driven by their passion of the local music scene to voluntarily work tirelessly to make things happen. It is their passion for local music that has helped create the vibrant and rich scene it is today. It is those local legends that have created our music history.

ABOUT THE PROJECT SO FAR:

We started this project with the help of a panel of local music Historians who selected the first group of musicians and other local music supporters they thought had played a significant role in Adelaide’s underground music scene.

After interviewing this first group of 20 people and listening to their stories, band histories and memories, it led us to wanting to interview a second group of musicians from bands that they had mentioned as being an inspiration over the years. This in turn led us to want to interview a third group and so on until we had interviewed over 90 people.

For the last 2 years our enormous cast (the participants), fans and other local music supporters have been sending us archival footage, live band videos, photos, posters and other memorabilia related to Adelaide's underground pub rock scene over the past 30 years. Over the years I have been filming live bands and more recently live band footage for the film. So now after recording and sifting through over 400 hours of material the edit is well underway and nearing a ruff cut stage.

THE BUDGET

This project has so far been produced without any financial help from funding bodies. Myself, The film crew, the Interviewers & the local music historians, have all donated all their time & efforts to achieve 9 separate film shoots over a 12 month period. All film equipment needed for pre – post production was supplied by Artsendup Productions and Pachyderm Studios at no cost to the project’s budget. Which I might add was $0. All other expenses have been self financed except for a few donations from people from the community who donated a total of $4,350 to help make this film happen. Unfortunately this is not quite enough to get the film finished.

I am hoping to raise funds so that I can finish this film and achieve a high quality sound mix, mastering and film grading. Our Goal is to raise $10,000 through pozible crowd funding but to complete the film will need more like $25,000. The difference, we hope will be made up from fundraising events, sponsorship and funding bodies.

Without your support this film will not reach the high quality finish that it deserves and may take much longer to finish.
