44 Home Film

This story takes place on Cole, Harlow, and Jayden's last day of school. They're graduating, and as a final way of connecting before their new independent lives take over, they meet up at the caravan park where they lost their childhood friend. Affected by nostalgia and wanting to make the most of what they feel is their final moments to capture their childhood, they decide to play one last game of 44 Home.
After recruiting some kids at the caravan park to play with them, they set off into what they'll soon find out to be a reunion of sorts, and an encounter of a terrifying force that they thought was gone for good.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my grandparents taking my sister and me around WA in their caravan during the school holidays. We’d meet other kids at caravan parks and play 44 Home late into the evening. That sense of freedom felt endless, until one year we decided we were too grown up to keep going. Looking back, I wish I’d had one last chance to be that kid again. That feeling became the inspiration for 44 Home.
I spent roughly two years working on this project on and off, and during that time the story evolved as I did. After leaving an abusive relationship, I was forced to do a lot of self-reflection, and the narrative issues I’d been struggling with began to resolve themselves. The connection between domestic abuse and my childhood didn’t come from experiencing abuse as a child, however, the feelings of vulnerability, confusion, and alienation I felt during those two years echoed emotions that are common in childhood, feeling small, unheard, and unsure of your place in the world.
I carried a lot of guilt during that time, which I’ve infused into my lead character, Cole. Not only because I was withholding information from the people that cared about me, but because I was denying myself the ability to escape the situation due to fear.
In this story, the game 44 Home becomes a manifestation of these themes, using possession as a metaphor for the cycle of harm and fear in domestic abuse. Just as abuse can be passed down through learned behaviours and trauma, my aim is to symbolise how pain moves from one person to another, through anxiety, fear, survival, and sometimes the learned capacity to harm.

This film was inspired by films like Talk to Me (2023) and The Babadook (2014); Australian films that take childhood experiences and use them to explore darker themes. We think this film is very topical right now as more young people are questioning family dynamics and confronting abuse. Obviously, in our project we take things to the extreme, but we feel this film has something to say about abuse and safety for women and children in Australia. 28 women were killed by a current or former intimate partner in 2025, and 1 in 4 women (23%) have experienced intimate partner violence since age 15. We hope that this film, although only one story, explores this very relevant cultural issue.
