Imagine… it’s the 19th century. You are 126 days at sea in a sailing ship, crammed into communal cabins with 300 other passengers, hopeful for a better life in the colonies. What would you do to stay sane (and sober)?
Thomas Pender wrote a diary. We are adapting this diary into a performance: VOYAGE: The Actual and Properly Truthful Account of the Emigration of Thomas Pender.
Our ensemble of creators has been working together for twelve months. We generate material for VOYAGE collectively. Collaboration is at the heart of our work and crowdfunding is an extension of that. So we invite you to collaborate with us.
We are campaigning for $8,000.00 to help bring this work to stage. Your donation will go directly towards expenses including studio hire, design materials, and artist fees for the final leg of our voyage: sailing into a two week season at fortyfivedownstairs in June 2013.
This story is important - not only because many of us have a family history of emigration, not only because emigration is such an important issue in Australia, but because of how history reflects the view we take of our society.
We have an amazing team of artists bringing this project to life:
Smiljana Glisovic is making film that tells the journey from the perspective of the sea. Tom Dickins is breathing life into some of the tunes sung on board. Helen Rekkor is fishing around the murky depths and trawling for a 19th century world of noise. Our design team is dreaming up and assembling an aesthetic of found and built curiosities, shining old world light on our contemporary stage.
Not to mention our ensemble of performers and devisors: Steve Brown, Alex Donald, Andrew Gray, Noah Moon, Daniel Niceski, Kate Parkins, Jon Richards, Fiona Rutkay, Shannon Quinn, Brook Sykes and Leone White.
