Five Properties of Chainmale exposes the ubiquitous narcissistic qualities of modern masculinity as five charming, personable and ultimately likeable characters confront their own crumbling reflections. It sorts through the increasingly neurotic self-justifications and modern excuses that increasingly construct our lives, ricocheting off those tendrils of contact and hope that help make existence more promising and fulfilling.

Five Properties draws from personal and observed self-delusional behaviour to present the fragile conceit of personalised patriarchy and the complicity that shores it up. It's confronting, honest - and surprisingly comic.

In a world order that lives by a code of constant growth, continual increasing consumption and ideologically based denial of consequence, discussions of personal, taken-for-granted ideologies are important. We deny our day-to-day gender bias, our day-to-day consumption, our day-to-day self absorptions, complicities, retreats and surrenders. Any production that invites us to laugh at ourselves and our personally minor yet socially effective fears is worth it.

Five Properties is one of those productions.

We're working with a technique we began developing for the Mayday Festival in 2013. It works with several different storytelling formats to create an innovative, disarmingly simple style that crosses literary and theatrical boundaries. It's a style rarely seen in Sydney or Australia, it's effective and engaging, and it's highly suited to this work. We're really passionate about bringing it to life and developing it further with your support.

We're raising funds to allow actors to take time to rehearse; to pay for design and construction; and to help with administration and some additional rehearsal costs. A professional rehearsal period in other words, that will make this work for everyone. Actors, crew, writer, director, Griffin - and most importantly you, the audience.
