‘Igniting Crowd Creativity’ The AUSSCAs – Lets You - The Crowd - Be The Judge

The AUSSCAs are the Australian Shortfilm Creativity Awards: A crowd-powered short film tournament, publicly exhibited in bars, hotels clubs & other venues across Australia.

The purpose of the tournament is to recognise and reward the creativity of Australia's finest short filmmakers with a share in ticket sales and the Grand Final winner to take home $10,000.

The AUSSCAs provides an opportunity for fans to cast their votes (via the AUSSCAs app) for the films that they believe to be the most creative, all at the same time, right across the country.

100% ‘Made In Australia’ - The AUSSCAs creates a new channel for the monetisation of short filmmaking creativity.

Here's How It Works

The Australian Shortfilm Creativity Awards is driven by the crowd. The tournament consists of four Quarter Finals (heats), which then lead into a Grand Final screening. In each quarter final, the crowd will vote to select the finalist for that night. The nominated films will then go on to the Grand Final.

Voting can only occur at AUSSCAs screening partner venues, which is at the same, right across the country.

To cast your vote, you must buy a ticket to attend an AUSSCAs screening at partner venue. If there are none in your area, go to your favourite local venue and see if you can empower them to become a screening partner - and we’ll reward you.

Once a ticket is purchased, the audience becomes the ‘Jury’– rating each short film against specific criteria - with an emphasis on ‘creativity’. All voting will occur via the AUSSCAs app.

At the conclusion of each Quarter Final, the votes are tallied, and the finalist will be selected.

Crucially, royalties from admissions revenue (ticket sales) are shared with ALL filmmakers. There will be one Grand Final winner - chosen by the crowd - who will take home $10,000.

The AUSSCAs - Lets You, The Crowd, Be The Judge!

Join the Australian Film Jury, get your ticket and get voting! The AUSSCAs need YOU!

The AUSSCAs are screening in locations near you - across the nation - on these dates:
Quarter Final I – Wed 21 October 2015
Quarter Final II – Wed 28 October 2015
Quarter Final III – Wed 04 November 2015
Quarter Final IV – Wed 11 November 2015
Grand Final – Wed 18 November 2015

Why Are We Doing This?

The short film entertainment format has rapidly risen to become the zenith of a new wave of creativity across the world.

Short films are visually exciting, and offer a concentrated jolt of inspiration. They take their audience through all of what feature length films have to offer but in a fraction of the time, and are produced at a fraction of the cost.

Short films engage audiences across all demographics; they foster unity and tolerance, and promote a more inquisitive, imaginative, and thoughtful society.

Our team hope that by creating the AUSSCAs tournament, and in turn more opportunities for fans to come together to celebrate and reward our short filmmaking community, the event will act as a catalyst to spurn greater production and monetisation of ‘Australian Made’ digital media, enhancing the social fabric of our communities.

This event is not about us – it’s about you. We hope that this initiative generates economic activity, causing accelerated job growth, specifically in the creative industries.

For too long now, Aussie films have struggled to stand out or even get onto cinema screens, both at home and overseas. They are out-marketed and out-muscled by Hollywood blockbusters. This is resulting in the stagnation of the Aussie filmmaking industry, which has reached a critical point.

The AUSSCAs is a Call To Arms: We need our Aussie filmmakers to keep making Aussie films, and we need to find more ways for them to be recognized and celebrated for their achievements. We need new channels for monetisation of Aussie made content – a new distribution model & new destinations where fans can see great Aussie made content – and now with the AUSSCAs, you can do all this - at the Pub!

If we fail in this action, Aussie filmmaking and culture will continue to be eroded by the Americanization of our viewing & cinema screens. It's time we fought back! Get a ticket and get down to your local Pub, and support the Australian filmmaking industry.

The AUSSCAs seeks to give you a voice, to ‘empower’ the crowd, providing to you the opportunity for you to vote for and select the films that you think should win.

The AUSSCAs is the nations 1st crowd-powered short film event. We want your opinion. No judging qualifications are required - if you're breathing and above ground, then you qualify!

Get behind our very own AUSSCAs and lets show the world what we’re made of!

We hope the AUSSCAs evolve to provide Australia’s richest prize purse – inspiring greater creativity - then delivering greater future entertainment value.

Our prize money for the Grand Final winner is $10,000!
Your pledges go towards our digital creativity fund – a pool of capital we’re building to invest in Aussie Made Media.

Filmsmakers who's work is selected for any Quarter Final or Grand Final will share in the royalties from ticket sales gained from admissions. A percentage of every single ticket sold contributes to this.

So get a ticket - support the industry - and get your right to vote.

What Makes You Qualified?

The AUSSCAs espouses our Aussie egalitarian values!

If you’re breathing and are above ground - you're qualified to vote as any member of the crowd can vote.

Help make a difference & support Australian filmmakers and their creativity!

Who Are We?

SCREEN THE AUSSCA’S AT YOUR VENUE

If you own, manage, work in or frequent a bar, pub, café or any other venue with a big screen TV, an LED display or a projected image screen or even have a small cinema screen - then the AUSSCAs is suitable for that screen.

AUSSCAs media can be transferred onto any screen - in any venue - with licensing permitting display on all screens simultaneously.

Nominate your venue to become a screening partner - show your support for the Aussie filmmaking industry and the crowd will come rolling in.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
AUSSCAs content is ‘copyrighted’ with the Quarter Finals and the Grand Final being PPV (Pay Per View) events, with licensing fees applicable to all screenings.

The AUSSCAs is a ‘packaged offer’ (four Quarter Finals & one Grand Final) with licensing fees charged in advance.

The AUSSCAs media comprises 2 – 3 hours of 3 – 15 minute (long) short films. Distribution is direct to venues (via all available means) and will occur in the period immediately prior to all scheduled screening dates.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
To facilitate voting (judging by the crowd & interaction at screening locations), a 3 – 5 minute (long) automated intermission – is programmed between the ‘roll’ of each AUSSCAs short film.

The AUSSCAs is a proprietary event marketed exclusively via the tournaments distribution partner – Australian Cinema Entertainment Network.

Patrons seeking to participate (vote) are required to download the AUSSCAs app. A cover charge of $5 is levied on participants attending any AUSSCAs screening, which then provides venue entry and access to the voting app.

A percentage of all admissions revenue accumulated is dispersed to reward filmmakers for their creativity. The winner of the Grand Final will take home the $10,000 prize money.

Venues choosing to secure the AUSSCAs are provided with a ‘ready-to-go’ internet platform for ticketing sales and can add ‘value added offers’ such as Meal & Movie Combo offers – See more info here http://aussca.com/venues/

A locally appointed ‘host’ (provided by AUSCEN) will MC all AUSSCAs events.

To secure the AUSSCAs in your venue – call 1300 288 287 or click the hyperlink to use the form.

ENTER YOUR SHORT FILM

HAVE YOUR CREATIVITY ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE CROWD

The AUSSCAs does not require submitted films to be made especially for the tournament, nor do we require your film to be an AUSSCAs exclusive! And there is no ‘signature item’.

Your signature is your creativity – which is what we want to see.

Submitted films can have been made 5 minutes ago or 50 years ago; it doesn’t matter, however all films submitted must meet our Terms and Conditions, and the technical requirements.

There is only one critical requirement that any AUSSCAs film needs to meet and that is – that the film must be ‘Made in Australia’

HOW TO SUBMIT
Submitting a film takes three steps:

1) Upload your film to Vimeo as a private viewing video. Your film will be viewed by us to determine if it is within the AUSSCAs terms and conditions.
2) Fill out the submission form
3) Send us a brief synopsis of 60 words or less as well as a pitch clip. The pitch clip can be any video 30 seconds or less whether it’s an excerpt from your film, a spot for your film or you, the creator, talking about the film.

The synopsis and pitch clip will be put up on the AUSSCAs website for public display, the more the public like it, the more likely your film will be chosen to screen.

Once your film is chosen to be screened at the AUSSCAs, you just send us your correctly formatted film on a DVD or USB (Format and technical requirements can be viewed in our terms and conditions)

REQUIREMENTS
Length: 3-15 minutes
Video
Ratio: 16:9
Display Format: 24fps
Resolution: 720p or 1080p
Submission fee: $15

How Does The Voting Work?

The voting system for the AUSSCAs is driven by the crowd in a 'last filmmaker standing' tournament style. Using proprietary app technologies, the crowd is provided with the opportunity to record their individual votes for the films that resonate with them on a creative level.

Voters rate ‘creativity’ by assigning stars to one or more categories.

The number of stars assigned is converted into points and aggregated across all voters - to determine total points and average star ratings for items in each category.

Purchase of a ticket to any screening location entitles you to vote.

Voting can only occur at AUSSCAs screening partner venues.

The crowd votes using the AUSSCAs app on their smartphone, and rates each film according to the judging criteria to select the finalist.

The AUSSCAs - Let’s You Be The Judge - is Australia’s 1st crowd-powered short film tournament with each member of the ‘crowd’ having 1 vote per film.

By voting, you are creating opportunities for the Australian short filmmaking community to be rewarded for their creativity.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Pledge funds are predominantly utilised to:
- 50% Prize : Create a digital media creativity fund to reward filmmakers.
- 20% Operations
- 15% App Development
- 15% Marketing: Raise market awareness for the tournament.

The Challenges

The biggest challenge we have for the AUSSCAs is to be able steer this really exciting new digital media initiative – and we need your help.

By far the most important challenge is to get the crowd behind the tournament.

This includes:
• Booking a ticket and supporting the event by attending an AUSSCAs screening location
&
• We need you (the fans) to MC screenings at each location. We need a host to MC each screening, at each venue, and we’re putting a ‘call out’ to the crowd to secure our ‘AUSSCAs Ambassadors’. Each host will share in a percentage of the ticket (admission) sales. The more people that have purchased a ticket in the local venue, the more money in your pocket.

If we can secure the ‘crowd’ and the MC hosts’,  we will get the locations and then generate an entirely new distribution channel into these venues. This will enable 'Aussie Made' short films to be seen more often - by more fans - in more local communities.

That’s got to be good for the industry!

Any venue in the country can exhibit the AUSSCAs, and the more venues and hosts we can secure, the greater the power of the crowd will be to select the best films.
