ZERO CARBON OPTIONS: SEEKING AN ECONOMIC MIX FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL OUTCOME
100% funded! Actions for stretch funding are listed below! Please keep giving, let's make this as big as we can!
ThinkClimate Consulting and
Brown & Pang are proud to be launching the report "Zero Carbon Options" on December 5 2012. This report will build understanding of the benefits of nuclear power as an electricity generation option in Australia.
We wrote this report, unpaid, because it matters
Currently, Australia has the highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions in the OECD. We have one of the most fossil-fuel dependent economies in the world, but nuclear power, a zero-carbon generation source, is prohibited. This limits our options to decarbonise.
As independent consultants, we have been working all year, unfunded, on the content and design of this report. We have done this because we believe the rapid decarbonisation of the Australian economy is critically important, and nuclear power must be a part of the solution.
Now we need funding
The report is complete. We now need a budget to help us launch. We have funded a launch event for Adelaide! Let's keep going and make this bigger and better!
This is a high-quality piece of work
This 15,000 word report has been extensively researched and twice peer reviewed by energy and climate experts
Professor Barry Brook (Sir Hubert Wilkins Chair of Climate Change at Adelaide University) and
Mr Martin Nicholson (author of
The Power Makers' Challenge, available through Springer Press). All references are clearly listed. It is currently in the graphic design stage. The graphic design work is being delivered by Brown & Pang.
The report is the first of its kind
The report compares two alternate energy solutions, a hybrid solar/wind renewable solution and a reference nuclear solution, against the challenge of delivering the same hypothetical energy task: the replacement of the Northern and Playford Power Stations in northern South Australia. The report compares these solutions against 13 criteria and convincingly demonstrates the essential importance of Australia embracing the full range of zero-carbon options at its disposal. The assessment criteria are:
Capital cost
Levelised cost of electricity
Greenhouse gas abatement
Land use
Water consumption
Material inputs
Operational waste
Job creation
Lifespan
Capacity factor
Reliability
Requirement for network enhancement
Existing global and national generating capacity
The funding request is tightly budgeted
For this first stage of fundraising, wanted to fund a major launch in Adelaide, capital of South Australia and sought $6,680. This target was met!
If funds continue to be pledged, we will promote this work much more extensively. Our original budget and stretch items are shown below.
Adelaide launch:
Venue hire (Science Exchange is reserved): $1,000
Independent moderator: $500
Postage for mail of invitations to critical parties: $100
Initial print run of hard copy report, 200 full colour copies: $3,080
Website development: $1,000
Miscellaneous: $1,000
Priorities for stretch funding are:Filming and editing of Adelaide launch event (quotes being sought)
Printing of report summary brochure (quotes being sought)
Increase run of printing for main report (easy to do and completely flexible based on funds)
Road-show launch, beginning with Melbourne
We are pleased to confirm that
Professor Doug Boreham of Bruce Power in Canada will be assisting us at the event as a panellist.
The report will look outstanding
