(finger)prints

15th - 23rd February, 2014
Channel Nine Kevin Crease Studio

Max has killed someone with his car, but wasn’t driving. What follows is a downward spiral as we watch the visceral relationships of characters implode from the prints they leave intentionally and accidentally. (finger)prints is a new work that explores ideas of relationships, perception and legacy while shattering theatrical conventions.

The Story

(finger)prints is the first collaborative work between Chloé Eckert and Hannah Fallowfield. Devised out of the idea to make theatre collaboratively created between the actors, artists and musicians involved, the show will debut at the 2014 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

The show has been written, directed and performed by a cast of young people ranging from 19-22. In this sense it is a show that caters for the next wave of young artists in South Australia. This sense of collaboration was also important when bringing in a group of young actors and working in the rehearsal room. Initially we had multiple rehearsals dedicated to the tweaking and finessing of the final version of the script.

During our initial thematic discussions we talked about the importance of deftly handling the death of Esther and focusing on the aftermath using Ollie, Sammi and Max as lenses for the audience. We felt the struggle and devastation experienced by the characters after the event enabled us to deeply explore the impact of a single event in a person’s life, without dwelling on her death itself.

Undergoing a creative development and staged reading in October, the edited show incorporates elements of physical theatre melded with both Brechtian techniques and Naturalism.

The sound design for (finger)prints has been sourced entirely from Adelaide bands. Including songs from Horror My Friend, Archers, Animal Shadows, Alfalfa, The Bearded Gypsy Band and Sincerely, Grizzly.

We wanted (finger)prints to be something we where we could collaborate with all types of artists in Adelaide, giving them all publicity and a stage to be reached by a wider audience who may have not heard of them. Art
from the show has also generously created by Adelaide artists.

After the Adelaide Fringe season, (finger)prints will undergo another creative development and then travel interstate for theatre festivals.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Our goal is to raise $400 to support the creation and staging of (finger)prints. The funds will be used to cover:

- Venue expenses
- Set materials (i.e. props, etc)
- Public Liability Insurance
- Publicity/Printing

The Challenges

As emerging artists, the lack of financial resources has been taken into account in both creating and designing the show. The central challenges in creating the show will be the set, paying off the venue and public liability insurance.

- Set Design
A minimalist set allows the show to be stripped back, enhancing the striking look into the way we form relationships and how a singe moment can change the curse of an individual’s life. The simple set and lighting design were a product of a limited budget, but provided the actors with an opportunity to showcase their abilities without the audience being distracted by flashy lighting changes or complicated set design. The blueprint ‘house’ was another opportunity to allow flow into the production and give the audience an almost ‘God-like’ birds eye view of the action on the stage.

- Time
We are already in the middle of rehearsal period, with the show opening the 15th of February. Any donations relieve pressure on us, allowing more focus on rehearsals instead of sourcing money and materials.

- We are new!
The first work between us as emerging artists in South Australia, we are not financially comfortable to create an elaborate show. Your donations will support an act that has gained interest interstate already, allowing us to add production elements we otherwise could not afford. The collaborative nature of the work and the incorporation of Adelaide bands and artist’s lends this show to showcasing the immense up-and-coming talent in Adelaide.
