From Tamarama to Tibet
Danma Niu, a young Tibetan woman from a remote, nomadic area in China, had always dreamed of studying overseas.
It was a dream that defied the conventional role for a young Tibetan women - many others her age were destined to stay in the village, find a husband and start a family.
But Danma has always been driven by a desire to make changes in her poor community, to find little ways to make life easier. At high school, she completed a running water project, giving households in her village access to clean running water. She also sourced funding for a batch of solar-powered generators that nomadic families, like her own, could take with them when they moved from winter village to summer pasture.
Then, in 2010, Danma met Australian, Andrea Myles. Andrea helped Danma score a scholarship to an Australian university, propelling the young Tibetan on an epic journey from her yak-herding home to the bronzed-bodied beaches of Sydney.
The first part of Danma's journey - "From
Tibet to Tamarama" - was heard across Australia in this ABC Radio National documentary:

Now
we're preparing to follow Danma and document the next chapter in her
extraordinary story, this time as she heads back to her home village for
the first time. We'll be following her with a camera, as she reconnects
with family and friends, and brings back the knowledge she's learned in
Australia to feed back into her community.
This is a chance to find out:
What changes have taken place in Danma's hometown - a tiny Tibetan community in China's Gansu province?
How
will Danma be able to use the knowledge and skills she's learned
studying in Australia to improve conditions for her family and
neighbours?
How does she now view the problems in her village, after 18 months spent exploring and studying overseas?
HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED
Danma's story is as amazing as it is unusual. We're
really proud of how we have been able to help so far, from fundraising for her education, to helping her tell her story worldwide. At every step
of the journey, we've filmed Danma's incredible journey.
When Danma goes home in July, we'd like to be there to help document
this important moment in her, and her community's journey.
To achieve this, we need your support.
To help Danma tell her story, we need to raise $3000 to cover transport and filming costs.
Our sincerest thanks to you for pledging your support and making a bit of positive change in the world!
www.facebook.com/TeamDanma
@TeamDanma
