We are aiming to break down the stereotypes that exist between
our two countries, Australia and Indonesia, and create a project filled with workshops, public outcomes
such as skate events and murals, and exhibitions showcasing the works of local
and the visiting Indonesian artists. Without the physical presence of the
Indonesian artists, this will not be achievable.
Ryan Ady Putra and Okta Samid are both from Jogjakarta, the
melting pot of tradition and contemporary culture of Indonesia. There work is playful,
yet extremely reflective on contemporary lifestyle issues. Much of their
inspiration is drawn from Indonesian and Western cultures, with a focus on
skateboarding and youth perspectives. Both of the guys are students at the
Indonesian Arts Institute, are more than active in the Jogjakarta arts scene,
and always have time for a skate. It’s time for these two motivated young
artists to get some international exposure and trial themselves in a foreign
land.

discussing the concept for Wonderluxe with the Indonesian artists, it was
agreed that two topics be approached: the tension between contemporary and
traditional culture, and the breaking down of stereotypes between Australia and
Indonesia. By involving cross-disciplinary artists from both countries, we aim
to create a live record of youth identification of the relationship between
creativity and contemporary culture, and create platform to exhibit the many
underexplored alternative cultures that are shared by Australian and Indonesian
youth.
We
have already successfully received $5250 in funds to finance the activities and
outcomes of the project, but we need an extra $3050 to support our two
Indonesian artist friends to travel to Australia, and cover their living costs
for the duration of the Wonderluxe project.
The quote for flights, visas and travel insurance for the
two artists is $1550.
We are then asking for $1500 to help with the living costs of the artists while
they are in Australia for the project. This will cover the rent of a room in a
share house so they can get the full youth/artist-in-Melbourne experience,
food, public transport, and activities for three weeks. Each artist would receive
a stipend of $200 per week to cover all costs.
So the breakdown is:
$1550, travel costs (including flights, visas and travel insurance).
$300, room rental ($100 per week for three weeks)
$1200 living expenses ($200 per week per artist for three weeks).
TOTAL $3050
Wonderluxe already has funds to finance the activities and
outcomes of the project, but we still require funds to support Ryan and Samid
to travel to Australia and their living costs while in the country. If we do
not raise enough interest here, we will approach alternative funding bodies,
make use of our own personal funds and try to make ends meet whatever way
possible.
