Sandford to Bruny Island Adventure
"I'm a big believer that feeling connected to something naturally makes you want to protect it".

Surfing and camping on the coast has shaped the way I see and value the ocean, myself and my community.
I've developed a deep connection to it, something that entirely changed my life.
Over the years I found myself asking "how can I give back to something that gives us all so much and in a way that feels true to me?"
That's why I am cycling with my surfboard from Sandford (Tasmania) to Cloudy Bay (Bruny Island) to raise money for a local charity Neighbours of Fish Farming (NOFF). NOFF is at the forefront of the fight to reverse the harm being done.
I want to see for myself the impact industrial salmon farming is having on this beautiful region of Lutruwita (Tasmania) and believe particularly as a surfer we owe it to our ocean to fight for it's health after how much it takes care of our own.
I also believe we need to preserve the natural raw beauty Tasmania represents to us all; celebrating its coastline, surf breaks and beaches.
I’ll be documenting my journey as it unfolds, trying to keep it simple and grounded as we move on day-to-day, cycling, surfing, living in the environment and being part of nature.
With the help of our friends at LOWco we hope to be able to share our story with an even wider audience, reaching out to people that may not have even heard of Bruny Island and don't know how destructive industrial aquaculture can be to an otherwise pristine coastline.
I'm a big believer that feeling connected to something makes you naturally want to protect it. I also understand the nuance that comes with the ability to care/connect, and what a privlege it is to have access to those feelings. I only hope that my own journey can help someone feel something similar, to find their own way of caring about our ocean.
I love the outdoors and I also wanted to tackle somthing new, having never bike-packed before, so I got a cheap bike off market place, fashioned a trailer with the help of my neighbour from a kiddies 3rd wheeler to carry my board and a couple of packs. Now I am hoping this journey will inspire others to care, and maybe even grab what they've got to make a go of a simple trip for a good cause.
Maybe this is just a reminder that it doesn't need to be fancy, it just has to be done!
Yours
Sarah Sacky
