Hello! My name is Emma, or better known as Emmiie on Wattpad. I’ve been writing fiction stories on wattpad.com since May 30, 2010. Since then, my stories have been published in Girlfriend magazine and I have also won multiple writing competitions; such as, The Watty awards, which was really cool. ABOUT NEWBORN:
(warning: some spoilers).

‘Newborn’ follows a young woman named, Helena Callahan, who unfortunately was dealt a very bad hand in life. She was physically abused as a child and witnessed her own father murdering her mother. After being sexually assaulted at the age of 14, Helena decides to run away from home. Of course, being so young and out in the world, especially without a good education, finding work was difficult. Thus, she eventually decides to sell herself for a living. Though not ideal, Helena sees no other options available. For many years, she continues her job as a working girl, and dancing in strip clubs for money, until one fateful day when Helena’s dangerous line of work results in her almost being raped again. Thankfully, her knight in shining armour appears to save the day, though his intentions may not be as sweet as his name. As Helena meets her Maker and is shown the blissful perks of becoming an undead creature of the night, she is awoken to a whole other fantasy realm, and reborn into a place where the world becomes her playground. Quite literally. It seems that Helena is a magnet for trouble, but only once she is reborn does she truly learn the gift of life, the clarity and repercussions of revenge, the ecstasy of grief, and the passion behind unconditional love. Follow Helena through her twisted journey as it unravels, and our fair maiden learns that her journey has only just begun.

Though perhaps not the best role model, Helena is a strong, fierce, and independent young woman. She always fights for what she believes in, protects her friends at whatever costs, and stands up for what she thinks is right. Regardless of her horrendous upbringing, Helena continues to blossom into a beautiful young woman, and overcome every obstacle that stands in her way.

Despite being set in a fantasy land, this novel does discuss and bring light to real events that occur in every day society, such as; rape, abuse—of multiple kinds, sex, gay rights, mental illness, racism, war, murder, suicides, and much more.

There are also a lot of diverse, quirky characters within this series.


FEEDBACK:

*I’ve had a lot of feedback whilst working on this series, but one particular comment stands out above the rest. I don’t want to say too much, as she told me this in confidence, but it was a young girl who wrote me. She told me about how someone close to her just passed away, and how she spent days just escaping into my stories. She said that I helped her. Out of all the comments, that’s always stayed with me. I know Helena series might not have a clear moral to the story, though it does discuss certain topics, but to help someone through my writing—to even offer them a world to escape into when reality gets tough—it really pulled at my heart strings.

MORE ABOUT MY PROJECT:

I started writing Helena series when I was seventeen years old. Since then, I have edited it thoroughly, but still it has a far way to go. As hard as I have tried to publish alone—saving up whatever money I can, editing by myself, and creating mock covers, I have accepted that I need help in achieving my goal because I can’t do it alone. I need to hire an editor and cover artist before I will be able to publish.

My plan is to publish on Lulu.com, however, as inviting as their publishing and editing deals appear, they are also quite costly. I’ve never done a crowdfunding project before and I didn’t want to be greedy. My set goal will allow me to purchase the stock image I want to use for the cover, which will cost me approximately $70.00, and then I can hire a cover artist from Deviantart.com – they usually work for around $100-250, depending on the quality. The last of the money will go toward editing. On Lulu, they charge .037 per word for editing. My novel exceeds 250,000 words, so to edit it via Lulu would cost approximately $9250. I am planning on cutting 50,000 words from the novel because it is simply too lengthy, regardless of what my readers believe. Still, even then, it’s a lot of money. Thankfully, I have a skilled friend who willingly offered to edit my novel for about $700, should I not exceed $1000. So even meeting $1000 will cover my project on a tight budget, however; should I exceed my goal then I will look into more professional editing. Either way, my readers should know and rest assured that the final version - though slightly altered - will be properly edited to the best of my abilities. There will be plot improvements and changes which will take Helena's story to a whole new level, but I can't do this without your help.

There are three completed books within Helena series thus far, and I’m working on the fourth installment currently - which I'm hoping to have completed by the end of this year. Editing my own novels was really holding me back from writing, it's such a daunting task, especially when you've written the book and see it differently than a professional editor would. So on top of the listed reasons, by pledging you are also helping a very passionate writer be able to work more thoroughly on the fourth installment within Helena series, possibly getting all the books written, edited and published faster - or at least the first draft of Chosen (the fourth book) available on Wattpad faster. By supporting my project, even just sharing it or liking it, you allow me to focus more on my writing.

Should I meet my goal I suppose that my biggest challenge will be deciding which parts of the book to cut and working with my editor to improve the novel, as I've never done this before, so it will be an entirely new experience for me and we will be under very limited time! From when this project ends, we will have less than a month to edit a 250,000 novel! However, I am very willing to work myself to the bone in order to get Newborn in print.
