From The Sea, To The Sea
George "Siosi" Samuels is a film-maker and creative entrepreneur, specializing in Cultural Animation. He was voted one of Australia's 50 "Young Extraordinary" entrepreneurs for 2012; featured at Melbourne's Viva Victoria Festival; and was recently interviewed by Adobe about his project Tales From Nanumea, an animated series to help preserve the myths and legends of a sinking nation, Tuvalu.
Tales From Nanumea addresses three key problems facing Tuvaluans: dying oral traditions; loss of land due to rising ocean levels; and a disengaged youth. The project addresses each of these by: collaborating with community Elders before a project; raising awareness of global warming during public screenings or promotions; and using animation to re-engage dialogue between the Youth and Elders. This project has received the most attention from companies and organizations in the creative, multicultural, youth and social entrepreneurship spaces.
George created the first three episodes on his own (see them at talesfromnanumea.com), but is now looking to work with others for this fourth instalment called "From The Sea, To The Sea." The action-drama piece will be based on the story of Fuaitai, daughter of local legend Great Grandmaster Fakaua. It is a cautionary tale about unfair mistreatment of "outsiders," including themes of jealousy, betrayal, justice and karma.
We have set the minimum target of $5,000, which will allow us to get started on Episode 4. If we reach $10,000, we'll be able to finish the episode. If we reach $30,000, we can finish the entire series. There are cool rewards for people at different price levels such as film credits, limited edition artwork (below), and your own animated cameo.
GLOBAL WARMING
Why This Matters
Apart from the myths and legends, this series also raises awareness of Tuvalu's plight in the fight against global warming. Very few are aware of the effects it has on low-lying attoll nations such as Tuvalu, which is set to be the first nation to sink if ocean levels continue to rise.
