The Birthday Boys

We are Ion Nibiru (Eye-on Ni-beer-roo), a production company based in Sydney. Our project is a theatrical play titled ‘The Birthday Boys,’ by American playwright Aaron Kozak. This is the Australian premiere of the piece, and will be performed with the support of the NIDA Springboard Program in December, 2011. Darren Gilshenan (STC, Bell Shakespeare) will direct the play. ‘The Birthday Boys’ first premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival winning the Best World Premiere Award and the LA Theatre Review Critics Choice Award in September 2010. The play received an extension to its season, and went on to have professional runs in LA, Texas, and now in New York.
“Set in 2006 Iraq, three U.S. Marines are captured by insurgents during an unheard-of infiltration of the Al Asad Airbase, regarded as one of the safest bases in the country. At a remote warehouse, bound and blindfolded, the three soldiers must struggle with fear, betrayal and even boredom, leaving morale as their only ally against an uncertain fate. The Birthday Boys offers a riveting, non-partisan look at honour and redemption.”

Alternately tense and hilarious, the play screamed of being a great piece for actors, and a grand way to collaborate on a new work. One which we are proud to present.
Our aim in doing this piece is to generate enough interest in the play to give it its first professional run and tour in Australia. This project is a co-operative production and our dream as a production company is to be independent, unique, and financially viable. Securing funds from this initial season would help to promote the play for a further tour regionally, and possibly interstate, and would also help to further the development of our first original piece slated for late 2012. The purpose of seeking support is not covering 1 or 2 specific costs; rather, working towards obtaining investment financially and emotionally in our future as a company.
We want to provide an interactive experience for those people who donate to us. Fundraising on Pozible provides a great opportunity for Ion Nibiru to create a sense of community surrounding the piece, and the company. In donating, you not only help to cover costs and make the show a financial success, you also take on the role of being a participant and become a major factor in the play being a creative success.
Ion Nibiru is bringing Aaron Kozak out for the Premiere. We are very excited that one of our rewards will be a place at a script writing workshop with Aaron. Please read through the project rewards section to see what else you could receive for your donation. :-)
We’ll keep everyone updated on the progress of the show through blogs, photos, and video trailers on Pozible. You can also connect with us via the wonderful world of social media! Please contact us whenever you like- part of being interactive is to interact.
