Kinly began as a project by two friends (a palliative care social worker and early childhood teacher) who shared a fierce belief that the way we support people through death, grief and separation could be warmer, gentler and far more human. They were determined to create something that didn't look or feel like the usual imagery of sunsets, oceans and clasped hands. They wanted tenderness, honesty and connection.

That's when the radiant force that was Leah Dent entered their world. A chance meeting soon turned into a friendship and mentorship surrounded by butcher's paper, radical questions, and a shared love of all things food and fun! Leah helped shape scattered ideas into something purposeful and beautifully clear.

The first chapter of this project is the Kinly Connection Kit - a thoughtfully designed collection of research-based tools and strategies to nurture connection, offer comfort, and gently ease the ache of separation and grief for people of all ages. It is practical, heartfelt and grounded in evidence, created to support families during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

The kit contains items such as:

  • High-quality magnetic-closure box - made to be decorated and to hold meaningful mementos (think perfume, glasses, concert ticket stubs, photos).
  • "The Book of Us" - a collection of prompts to help share stories, memories and reflections.
  • "Forever Card" - a simple card to write a message to a loved one. They can carry it through every stage of life, and return to it again and again to feel the author's presence.
  • "Kinly Bands" - one for each person. A gentle, visible reminder of connection, even when apart.

Through her two years of kicking terminal illness's butt (with her trademark grit, grace and cheekiness), Leah, alongside her beloved Duncan, championed this project. Everything Kinly builds from here carries her legacy. She was our sparkly-eyed, golden dreamboat who made everyone in her orbit feel seen and connected.

Now, with immense generosity, Duncan is sharing this project with Leah's community. By making a pledge in Leah's name, you'll be placing a Kinly Connection Kit directly into the hands of a family receiving care at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where Leah received treatment and care. Aiming for September 2026 delivery - we'll keep you updated!

Budget Overview

Kinly is nearing the end of its design phase and preparing to move into production within the next month. Every dollar pledged will go directly toward purchasing the materials and components needed to create the Kinly Connection Kits.

Your support will specifically fund kits that will be gifted in Leah’s name to families receiving care at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. We’re honoured to give back in her spirit.

We also warmly welcome in‑kind support. If you or someone you know can contribute skills in digital and/or creative design, product manufacturing or any other practical expertise, your generosity will help us bring the next stages of Kinly to life. In return, we will gift Kinly Connection Kits as a heartfelt thank you.

Every contribution, financial or practical, helps place these kits into the hands of families who need connection, comfort and care.
