The community festival Reclaim The Lanes returns for its 4th installment in 2012. Nonsponsored and organic in its development, it celebrates the forgotten and underused urban spaces of the Inner West and the creative community that live amongst them.

It is a free, roving party, but this year we're giving participants the opportunity to contribute financially to the event's growth and organisation via POZIBLE.  All funds gained will go towards making the event safer, cleaner, louder and more engaging, random & culturally significant than ever before!

The event is organically organised by a core group of highly skilled volunteers who come together each year to tie together an event that is significant and unique on a global level.  We all appreciate any help in making this task easier & we have plans to use any funds raised on covering expenses for bands, public art, decor, waste management, insurance and wet weather planning.

Starting as an idea between friends it has developed into a larger than life festival that formed part of the Sydney Fringe in 2011. Reclaim The Lanes was the largest event in a series of three fringe events that together won an award for embodying the spirit of the Fringe. The 2011 event saw around a thousand people brave heavy rain to perform and dance in the street in an explosion of colour and sound.

Chris Lego, one of the main organisers of the event explains. “We won the award as we try to encourage everyone to participate in the event. Reclaim the lanes embodies the spirit of the Inner West and the diversity and creative potential which is a huge part of why we live here.” “We aim to be a sustainable event in terms of rubbish and recycling management, our relationship with our neighbours and the police. We are mindful of our neighbours and finish at 9pm sharp. We are doing this because we still believe in community spirit and celebration. We believe in exploring the potential of our neighbourhoods and the spirit of carnival.”

Hundreds of people join along the parade as it stops at two secret laneway locations for an hour
each to experience the potential of these forgotten spaces of Newtown. Along the way expect bands, sound systems, games, activities for kids, picnics in the lanes and public art as part of the day’s entertainment.

The procession winds its way in dance and music to a central Newtown location where the festival continues into the early evening. Reclaim The Lanes 2012 is on Saturday the 17th of March. The parade leaves from the Hub at 2.40pm Sharp.  CHECK THE FACEBOOK EVENT FOR MORE DETAILS!
