Jogjakarta’s Senyawa uniquely manage to embody the aural flavours of Javanese music
whilst exploring the framework of experimental music
practice, pushing the boundaries of both traditions. In doing so their music strikes a perfect balance between their avant-garde influences and cultural
heritage to create truly contemporary Indonesian music.

Their sound is comprised
of Rully Shabara’s deft extended vocal techniques punctuating the
frenetic neo-tribalism of instrument builder, Wukir Suryadi’s modern-primitive
instrumentation. Inventions like his handcrafted ‘Bamboo Spear’; a thick stem
of bamboo strung up with percussive strips of the plant’s skin along side steel
strings. Amplified it fuses elements of traditional Indonesian instrumentation
with garage guitar distortion. Sonically dynamic, the instrument can be rhythmically percussive on one side whilst being melodically
bowed and plucked on the other.

The duo has been
performing together since 2010 when Wok The Rok dared them into doing an impromptu
improvisation. The unlikely combination of Wukir’s bent traditionalism with
Rully’s dada-esque vocalisations was immediately arresting. Wowing not only the
audience, both musicians knew then and there that they had stumbled onto
something incredibly special. They quickly began composing music together and
shortly after released their debut self titled album on Wok The Rok‘s seminal
label, Yes No Wave.
They also started
to perform together extensively, touring Indonesia several times over to become
a formidable live act. Their mesmerizing live show quickly attracted
considerable attention for an Indonesian underground act. In no time at all
they began to receive invitations to perform at festivals in Australia and
Europe including Hobart’s MONA FOMA, the Adelaide Festival, Melbourne
International Jazz Festival, the Glatt und Verkert Festival in Austria, Malmo Sommarscen
Festival in Sweden, Oct Loft Jazz Festival in China, they even toured Australia
nationally as special guests of Regurgitator.

Shipping

All prices do not include shipping your record so once our pozible campaign is complete we will contact you to organise shipping and quote you the cost based on where you are in the world.
European pre-order pledges will be fulfilled from within the EU so expect a shipping price typical of shipping an LP record with the EU. North American orders will be fulfilled by my distributor in the USA, therefore i will send all copies in one lot to San francisco from the EU and then have them shipped domestically so the shipping cost for US orders will be shipping to the USA dicided by total north american orders + domestic shipping.
Indonesia orders will need to wait until Senyawa return home in August and either mail you records or get the personally from them.
Australian customers will have their records shipped from Indonesia once Senyawa get home so will cost Indonesia to australia freight / total orders + local shipping (sydney customers may pick up from dualplover)
All other countries we'll organise on a case by case basis on what we think will be the cheapest option
Dualplover and The Volcanic Winds Project are co-release the band’s first vinyl LP and we need your help to raise the funds to make it a reality. You can either pledge for fun, Mp3's or a copy of the eventual LP amongst other rewards.
Here's a two track preview of the album titled Sanepa

This is our second attempt to raise the funds to put Senyawa on Vinyl, our previous pozible campaign relied on a small pressing of Vinyl at an inhibitively expensive Australian pressing plants which forced us to have a higher target of AUD$4000 to see the project to fruition.
Since that time Senyawa have been attracting attention in Europe so we decided to revisit the LP with the idea of pressing them in Europe at far cheaper rates allowing us to decrease our target to AUS$2500 and decrease our pledge price for pre-sales from AUD$55 to AUD$25.
We sincerely believe that with these differences we will this time have a successful campaign especially with new label partners dualplover who successfully raised the funds for Justice Yeldham's picture disc under similar circumstances.
