Barry versus Kelly is a dramatic narrative about the trial and execution the famous Irish/Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, and the haunting of Judge Barry, the judge who sentenced Kelly, with the words - "I will see you where I go." Set inside the freezing  walls of the Melbourne goal, the play and music  explore the raw courage of Ned, and his mother Ellen, and the anguish of the judge who fears he might be making a martyr of Kelly. With script and music by Felix Meagher (authour of The Man They Call The Banjo), and additional music by Lou Hesterman,  Barry Versus Kelly is a play that all Australians should see.

Cast

FELIX MEAGHER
Felix Meagher, author and composer plays the role of Judge Redmond Barry

LUCINDA BARRATT
Melbourne's Lucinda Barratt plays the role of Chloe in Barry versus Kelly . Chloe is a fictitious character based on the famous painting by Jules Lefebvre, which is on permanent display at the Melbourne landmark hotel, Young and Jackson's. After being introduced to the audience as an entertainer, dancing a routine called Naughty Ballerina at the Melbourne Club, Chloe becomes Justice Barry's nurse. As his nurse she tells the inside story of his sudden decline in heath during the trial and execution of Ned Kelly. Just for the record Marie, the young French woman who posed for the painting, never visited Australia and died tragically at age 21 two years before the painting was famously exhibited at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880.
Lucinda is a graduate of the Performing Arts Course at Monash University, and is currently also playing a role in Cloc Theatre's production of 42nd Street.
Naughty Ballerina is one of the additional pieces of music contributed to Barry versus Kelly by Lou Hesterman. Lou is a resident of the surfing hamlet of Apollo Bay, VIC, where he leads the monthly Blues Session.

ANTHONY PENHALL
Revered teacher and educationalist, Anthony Penhall, plays the role of Ned Kelly in Monday night's Launch of Barry versus Kelly at the Celtic Club. Speaking in contemporary mode, without accent, and sporting a thin rather than thick beard, Penhall's Kelly explains that he is "A rebel, not a criminal," and why he does not fear the inevitable punishment of Justice Sir Redmond Barry. He takes inspiration from the words of Robert Emmet, the irish hero who at his trial said, "I am ready to die. Let my character and motives rest until other times and other men can do them justice. Then and not until then let my epitaph be written."

DANNY SPOONER
Australian folk legend Danny Spooner plays multiple roles in the Barry versus Kelly . Danny plays the roles of "Red" Kelly (Ned's father), Anthony Trollope (English and Irish novelist), James Barry (Redmond's older brother), Dr Johan Gunst (Redmond Barry's doctor), and the Duel Master.

CORA BROWN
Salt of the earth, Cora Brown, has delighted the throngs in many a Shire Hall in rural Victoria with her hauntingly beautiful voice.  We are excited to have her play the roles of Ellen Kelly and Louise Barrow.
