Two circuses. Only one of them will make it to The Big Top. The knives are out as the Noonamah Circus take on the Humpty Doo for the coveted position. In the build-up to the show, Max, a lion tamer, breaks his Tightrope Order that kept him at a distance from his ex-assistant. Meanwhile, a new assistant arrives with her own set of tricks …

Inspired by the events of the 2010 federal election campaign, The Lion Tamer is a deft weave of politics, circus, domestic violence, gender relations and geese. Written by Sandra Thibodeaux with dramaturgy and direction by Alex Galeazzi, The Lion Tamer enjoyed a highly successful reading at the 2012 Darwin Festival. We are now poised for production at Brown's Mart in May 2013, and finalising the funding necessary to achieve our artistic goals.

The Lion Tamer has a budget of just over $100K. Around 55% of funds have been derived from government sources (federal, state and local) and from expected box office. Brown's Mart are contributing significant cash and in-kind support, and the remaining funds are being sought from philanthropists, corporations and Pozible donors. Around 70% of the funds will go directly to artists. Your support, therefore, contributes to the employment of Territory artists and, thus, the development of the NT theatre industry.

Brown's Mart has DGR status. When you make a donation, you may choose 'no rewards' or 'rewards'. If you choose 'no rewards', Brown's Mart will send you a tax-deductible receipt. Please note that if you choose this option, you cannot derive any other benefit (e.g. a free ticket) due to taxation regulations.

The Lion Tamer team is almost exclusively Territorian. The actors are: Robbie Hoad (Max, the lion tamer), Ella Watson-Russell (Courtney, Max's trainer and trapeze artist); Tessa Rose (Rosita, a magician's assistant who moves into Max's wardrobe); and Luke Scholes (Eddie, rigger and ex-boyfriend of Rosita). Key creatives include: Kris Bird, set designer; Panos Couros, composer/sound designer; Luiz Pampolha, lighting designer; Robyn McLean, costume designer; and Colin Holt, scenic artist.
