For the Love of a Viola d'Amore
My dream is to play the viola d’amore. If you've heard one already, you'll know why it's called the 'Viola of Love' - it's beautiful! As a baroque violinist and the artistic director of Evergreen Ensemble, I'm passionate about contributing to a rich and varied Early Music and New Music scene in Australia. I’ve always loved the sound of the viola d’amore and regret to see that there are no players regularly performing on the instrument in the country.
I used to live down the road from a renowned d’amore maker in France, Daniel Ross, and would like to commission one of his seven-string instruments to bring back to Australia. You can check out his website here (www.danrossluthier.com), and watch a mesmerising video of him making an instrument here (https://youtu.be/J_vYm04gfFs). He lent me a one of his early instruments for a short time, and I was able to record this track (https://youtu.be/ydmc8GCQpOY).
I'm excited about the idea of having a viola d'amore performing rarely-heard baroque, folk and classical music in Australia, as well as being able to commission new Australian works with its unique timbre in mind. It will also be made available for friends and colleagues to play whenever possible.
This Pozible campaign just happens to coincide with my 40th birthday and I would be thrilled if you’d consider donating towards this very special gift-of-a-lifetime!
Thanks and amore,
Shane

Cherish
Have your name listed amongst the Generous Donors on the Evergreen Ensemble website and the liner notes of the first recording using the viola d'amore.
Adore
A copy of the album 'Airs for the Seasons' (containing one viola d'amore recording by Shane on a borrowed instrument) AND have your name listed amongst the Generous Donors on the Evergreen Ensemble website and the liner notes of the first recording using the new viola d'amore.
Head Over Heels
Two tickets to an Evergreen Ensemble concert featuring the viola d'amore (Available for our self-organised concerts, eg. Geelong or Castlemaine in Nov 2020). The tickets will remain valid indefinitely until you find a date and location which suits, and they are fully transferable.
Passion
Are you a musician yourself and would like to try the viola d'amore too or even use it to do a performance in your own ensemble? This pledge gives you two-weeks with the instrument to practice, perform or record. Yes, this is subject to its availablity and the practicalities of making the exchange, but with enough forewarning we can make it work!
Treasure
Like the Passion reward, pledging here allows musicians to borrow the viola d'amore themselves for performance or recording, but for three weeks instead of two. It also includes a 2hr lesson or tune-swap with Shane to get you started!
True Love
Perhaps you love the viola d'amore, but just to listen to, not to play? This reward is a 1hr concert of solo viola d'amore and baroque violin given by Shane in the location of your choice, eg; house concert, social drinks night, fundraiser, school event, party (a relaxed party, not one where I'm jamming with the DJ...Although, come to think of it that could be fun ;-)). Travel is included within reasonable distance.
