The Book Feature Film
A fractured academic and an immigrant student navigate trauma, identity, and survival in contemporary Sydney — confronting the emotional cost of choosing stability over creative truth.
The Book is a psychological drama set in contemporary Sydney.
The story follows Professor John Kensington, a once-promising academic who has never drank or smoked. As he sets out to write a book that would change the lives of socially outcast people, his life slowly collapses under unresolved trauma and creative suppression.
Alongside him is Veronica — an immigrant student balancing financial pressure, cultural displacement, and personal dignity while trying to build a future in Australia.’
Through their intertwined journeys, the film explores the emotional consequences of choosing profession over passion — and the silent cost of survival for immigrant creatives and students.
About the project
From Director Pradeep Maduri:
The Book is the central creative outcome of my Higher Degree Practice-Led Research titled:
“Passion vs Profession: The Financial and Emotional Costs of Zero-Budget Filmmaking for Immigrant Filmmakers in Australia.”
The film embodies this research through narrative. It explores not only the struggles of immigrant creatives but also the realities faced by immigrant students like Veronica—balancing financial pressures, survival, and ambition.
Importantly, this project is deeply collaborative and student-involved. It reflects one of the core research themes: collaborative filmmaking as both method and outcome. The process itself becomes part of the research.
