tilde was motivated by other community based transgender film festivals around the globe, and the absence of any trans specific film festivals in Melbourne. Stories from and about trans and gender diverse people have historically been marginalised, silenced or distorted. We wanted to take an active part in countering this, and believe film is a pretty spectacular vehicle for doing so! Hence tilde was born! tilde, therefore, will be Melbourne’s first film festival created to showcase and support the work of Australian and international trans and gender diverse filmmakers as well as works that have trans and gender diverse content.

tilde believes stories have the power to heal, connect, agitate and educate. We hold a vision of having more positive and authentic representation of gender diversity and a desire to create more dialogue between, as well as the sharing of stories across, communities both locally and globally. We work collaboratively with others in the trans, queer and allied communities including our partner festival Sydney International Transgender Film Festival.
tilde 2014 will premiere at the Bella Union Bar at Trades Hall, Carlton from the 21^st-23^rd November and will showcase short films, feature length films, a retrospective, discussions, panels and the odd party.

We would love your support in making this a reality! The festival is open to everyone, regardless of gender or sexuality. tilde aims to expand and connect communities and we welcome everyone who is keen to be a part of hearing, telling and sharing these stories to be part of and contribute our events.

Your support will go towards covering costs of administration and establishment, venue hire costs, advertising, promotions and program, website maintenance and associated costs, sound and visual engineers, ticketing costs, guest speakers, and most of all bringing films to the big screen!

We aim to keep ticket costs as low as possible and any leftover funds will be used to towards making tilde 2015 bigger and better.

As much as this is a non profit venture, there are still a number of costs involved in order to establish and run a film festival and we are all working our butts off as volunteers to make this happen! It can be challenging to get funding in the arts and around transgender initiatives. We are following up different options but we are also hoping to involve the community in supporting making our dream become a reality!
