Tiny Stadiums Festival 2014

Successful on 31st May 2014 at 12:00AM.
Now in it’s 7th year, Tiny Stadiums is Erskineville’s annual festival of live art.

This year we hope to once again infiltrate Erskineville with performances and site-specific installations by some of Australia's most exciting emerging artists.

Our 2014 artists include Frances Barrett, Lottie Consalvo, Deep Soulful Sweats, Hissy Fit, and Mook Gwa Institute. Tiny Stadiums will also feature a theatre season at PACT centre for emerging artists by the genre crossing collective Team Mess.

With your support, Tiny Stadiums will take over the streets of Erksineville with poignant, captivating works commenting on contemporary life in the suburb and beyond. The line up of local and interstate artists were selected for their unique perspectives on current politics, domesticity and family life, property, sub-cultures, and nightlife. For Tiny Stadiums 2014 the private is political. Tiny Stadiums occupies shared spaces of Erskineville, blurring the public from the private and exposing undercurrents of empowerment, subversion, and reclamation.

2014 will be Groundwork’s third and final year of curating Tiny Stadiums festival and we’re confident it will be a special one.

The festival will run from November 13th - 22nd, 2014.

Francis Barrett

A MANUAL FOR TIME TRAVEL

'A Manual for Time Travel' is a site-specific performance that will take place in one of Australia’s most iconic queer pubs, The Imperial Hotel. Barrett will explore two Australian traditions that occur in pubs: ‘Politics in the Pub’ and ‘drag performance’.

'A Manual for Time Travel' is a site-specific participatory performance that will take place inside Australia's most iconic queer pub, The Imperial Hotel. Part-manifesto part-spectacle A Manual for Time Travel will be a performative installation consisting of twelve participants who will perform a filibuster on time & space. The manual is an experimental text that addresses notions of history, futurism and site in relation to the performing body. This project aims to address the crucial role that performance plays in forging communities & as a platform for politicized voices.

'A Manual for Time Travel' will take place in two stages: the first stage will be a one-day development workshop and the second stage will be the performance at The Imperial. Lead by Barrett, the workshop & performance will be undertaken by twelve queer-identified artists.

This project takes as it’s starting point the centralised place of 'the pub’ in Australian culture. Barrett has aligned two traditions that take place in Australian pubs; the public forum of ‘Politics in the Pub’ & the celebratory spectacles of drag performance. Barrett has identified that these are two traditions that utilise the pub as a democratised space for expression that enable communities to take root & flourish.

Lottie Consalvo

LOVE IS FOR THE FORTUNATE

'Love is for the Fortunate' is a site specific, durational performance piece dealing with comfort and love in contrast to the discomfort felt by detainees in Australian operated detention centres.

'Love is for the Fortunate' is a performance that is both personal and public. It deals with comfort and love in contrast to the discomfort felt by detainees in Australian operated detention centres, Manus Island detention centre in particular. This performance deals with the collective desire for love and comfort. Being denied a life of fundamental comforts, love and security is denying someone of emotional rights that are innately human.

"The idea for this performance came from my current comfortable state of being. After living overseas for an extended period of time I found myself homesick, the desperation to be with my family and be treated with unconditional love was overwhelming. Since returning home my life is a cliché. I am happily married with a baby, I have a dog, a family car and I live by the sea. There is a vulgarity in the comfort of domesticity lived by the more fortunate. Some deny wanting to start a family and to settle down, however it is innately human to want to be in love and loved and to create comfortable lifestyles however we individually define it."

Deep Soulful Sweats

FANTASY LIGHT YOGA

A dark yogic disco performance.
A little bit yoga, a little bit Jane Fonda, a little bit interpretive dance, a little bit deep house. Exorcise through exercise, embrace the inner chaos, the darkness and the light.

Natalie Abbott (fire), Sarah Aiken (air), Rebecca Jensen (water) and Janine Proost (earth) are DEEP SOULFUL SWEATS, an energetic neo-spiritual dance event ritual/yoga/party where everyone is a participant and there are no spectators. Live DJ’s (John Anon, and DJ Pussy Envy) support the evening with driving beats and allow participants to exorcise through exercise.

https://www.facebook.com/deepsoulfulsweats

"It was like a kitchen disco only BETTER!"
"I have been trying to find something like this my WHOLE LIFE"
"Those women are AMAZING"
“With fancy footwork and hard-hitting rhythms even the most reticent mover is unable to resist the chance to get down and dirty – it’s just too damn fun!” Emily Sexton, Next Wave Artistic Director.

Hissy Fit

GIRLS TO THE FRONT

Hissy Fit aim to bring ‘girls to the front’ by inviting women up on to the stage to engage with and celebrate the assertive and defiant parts of their identities. We invite women to take part in a large scale, all female choreographed head-banging performance.

Part participatory work, part punk rock initiation, the work invites girls and women-identified individuals to take part in a choreographed head bang led by the all-grrl art collective Hissy Fit.

The feminist politic of the early 90s Riot Grrrl movement will greatly inform this work as Hissy Fit seek to create a positive, transgressive and empowering space for women and girls to tear through the fabric of social expectation and heteronormative notions of gender, sex and sexuality. Riot Grrrl band Bikini Kill was notorious for establishing a ‘guys to the back and girls to the front’ rule at their concerts. This encouraged women to claim the front of the stage and mosh pit as their space, a traditionally masculine and aggressive site within the punk gig environment.

“It was a brilliant conceit to transpose this most feminine of afflictions into the masculine arena of heavy rock, complete with matching black leather onesies.” – RealTime (Issue 120, 2014) on Hissy Fit’s Episode

Mook Gwa

STORY TITLE

The Mook Gwa Institute intends to make real estate UN-real by blurring the lines between understanding the concept of Speculation as engaging in risk for profit and arbitrary valuation, and Speculation as engaging with risk in memory and storytelling.

'Story Title' is a perambulatory performance and workshop experience which audiences bid in a pop up auction outside Erskineville businesses for their chance to make a space their own by imparting their stories of place and ownership to others. The work develops from a personal perspective of trying to reconcile intersecting and complex observations on urban gentrification, heritage loss, foreign property ownership and the ensuing veiled xenophobia.

"We wanted to understand the ideas around ownership and what made the ownership of a particular space significant. As a foreign investor you might purchase a property for its economic value and have no stakes in utilising that space to live in, and through the act of living and the creation of memories and stories.
Ultimately this performance is looking at how we own a space. Is ownership simply facilitated as an economic transaction or one of experience?"

Team Mess

TROJANS

Inspired by the Mexican soap operas for which there is such hysterical enthusiasm and demand that their allocated budgets simply cannot support their production, Team MESS will present a new video-performance work that is shot in front of an audience live on a nightly basis to form the new television series 'Trojans'.

The project will operate in the same incredibly fast rhythm as the Mexican soap operas. A different writer will provide the script each night, for which actors and crew will not even get the chance to site in advance of shooting. Instead they enact live and directly when shooting in accordance to instructions through radio receivers in their ears.

The narratives produced will be constantly in-flux each night, created in the joyous fashion Team MESS have developed for collaborating with audiences on journeys together into their fictional shows. Trojans will be built on a simple theatrical structure, and a conceit that seduces the audience into actively playing a part in the spectacle.

How The Funds Will Be Used

All funds raised will go towards supporting our artists to make new work for presentation the 2014 Tiny Stadiums festival.
- The five live art works will receive an artist fee.
- The theatre work will receive an artist fee.
- A production manager and production crew will be employed to aid the planning and installation of all works, and provide technical support to the artists during the festival.
- A publicist will be employed to profile the artists and build their audience.

TINY STADIUMS WILL NOT HAPPEN AS PROGRAMMED WITHOUT THESE FUNDS.

Every little bit counts! Whatever you can spare will go a long way towards making this festival happen.

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $10,000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.

IF WE EXCEED OUR TARGET: We will split the funds equally between the artists to go towards material and further costs associated with the development and production of their Tiny Stadiums projects. That means MORE artist fees and that's important!
