The Australian Flute Festival is very excited to announce that well known Australian composer, Paul Dean has agreed to write a new work for flute and piano which will be premiered in the Finals of the Solo International Flute Competition in October 2015. The AFF has agreed to provide 50% of the commission funding, and we now need to call on our supporters and friends in the flute community to help us reach our Pozible goal of $2,750 to get this project up and running and allow us all to share in this new creation.
Over the years, the festival competition finals have often featured works by Australian composers. To have one dedicated to, and premiered at the Festival is something we can all look forward to. Our new piece will no doubt become part of Australia’s ever-widening landscape of musical gifts for future performers. We are honoured that Paul Dean has agreed to make time in his schedule to help expand and grow our repertoire.
The 2015 Festival will be hosted at the Australian National University over October 2nd-5th. The solo competition has a long history and in recent years has attracted competitors from across the globe.
Many of the past winners of this competition have gone on to have careers in all areas of flute playing. Some of our shining stars from this event have included Geoffrey Collins (Principal Flute-Adelaide Symphony Orchestra), Rosamund Plummer (Principal Piccolo-Sydney Symphony Orchestra) Michael Waye (Principal Piccolo-West Australian Symphony Orchestra), Megan Sterling (Principal Flute-Hong Kong Philharmonic), Emma Sholl (Associate Principal Flute-Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Katie Zagorski (Principal Flute-Auckland Philharmonic), Mark Xiao (Freelance Flute Player-Switzterland), and Laura van Rijn (currently contracted to Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra)....and many more! Even I got lucky one year, and I know that just entering and being a part of this event in itself was an experience I will never forget.
How The Funds Will Be Used

Paul Dean-Australian Composer and clarinetist, Artistic Director-Australian National Academy of Music, Melbourne.
The total cost of the commission is $5,250. The Australian Flute Festival is kindly donating $2,500 of this. All our funds raised through this campaign ($2,750) will be used to pay the balance of the commission. The total cost sits well within the Australia Council's recommended composer fee guidelines.
